Who here races autocross or open track road course

Back in the 1970s, when I was in graduate school at the University of Washington, I autocrossed a 2 liter Invader/VW in A modified in both the US and Canada. I'd drive to events with two mounted race tires inside the car and two bungeed to the top of the car. Many happy memories of driving home...

Wonder whether they provide ground transportation to nearby attractions?

    When is it time????

I recommend flying with at least one other instructor and getting a critique. I've trained people much older than you, so age alone is not likely a factor. It could be perceptual/motor issues, or it could be the result of starting pattern work without enough foundation in basic aircraft control.

Is G.A. a sport, or is it a hobby? What?

Like driving a car, it can be a sport, a hobby, a business, or transportation, or any combination of them. Since my annual airplane mileage is abut ten times my car mileage, it could be seen as my primary transportation

    Flying GA Into Philly Int'l?

I used to fly there all the time for meetings. The best thing about the airport is that there is a train that goes downtown. The quick, inexpensive ground transportation makes up for the high fees. Sometimes, Atlantic would run me downtown in a van. You will probably get Runway 26, which is...

    cell phones!

I have s cheap flip phone. No desire to ever have a smartphone. In fact, if I weren't a pilot, I would have never gotten a cell phone at all. I bought it back when wait times of twenty minutes or more were common in the DC area for Flight Service.

To IFR or not to IFR?

I find that when a student flies weekly, we can almost always do a checkride in the FAA minimum hours. Stretching out the training will increase the number of hours required to become ready for a ride. That's the downside. The upside is that you will get a chance to fly in a greater variety of...

WWII Plane designs that you would change?

Other than the P-38, the entire first generation of US fighters were optimized for low altitude performance. In the case of the P-39, the turbocharger was deleted in response to the Army's fighter doctrine. The result was that these early WW2 fighters were essentially useless on much of the...

    Ice around hangar/ramp areas

Have you tried ice melt to get a clear area for pushing the airplane into the hangar? Taxi at a less than walking pace. The airplane will brake and steer pretty well under those conditions. When you are close enough to push it it, stomp down hard with your heels to break the ice and get a...

    IFR Chart Provider Selection.

I was a steadfast Jeppesen customer for twenty years. Even with Q Service, the paper chart filing was still a chore. Even so, it was the 40 pound flight bag taking up too much weight and volume that made me move to electronic. The FAA enroute charts are fully as good as the Jeppesen ones, but I...

    NEXUS 7 32 GIG

Yes. I've been using mine for nearly a year. I use the external GPS in the GDL-39, but the internal one also works quite well in both high and low wing aircraft. The WiFi is sufficiently good to work on the ramp at most of the airports I use.

New IFR Student - Book Question

I really like the Peter Dogan book. I'd like to put in a word for Richard Collins' Flying IFR. The two are complementary, with the Collins' book serving as background for Dogan's. Neither of these address, or even mention, GPS. Garmin makes a good manual and set of tutorials for the GNS 400 and...

"The Wars of Justinian" by Procopius of Caesarea. It's surprisingly applicable to the work I am doing in air-ground communications.

Garmin Pilot for Android -- Tech Support, Tips, Tricks

Yesterday's flight came right after a double update -- Garmin Pilot 2.7.3 and the new Kit Kat operating system. Updates always scare me -- I remember the Jelly Bean debacle last year, which disabled most FB software, and the August update, which clobbered XM datalink right before a major trip...

Suggestions wanted...FXE to Key West or FXE to Tampa

We flew down to Fort Myers for a week last spring. While we were there, we did a day trip to Key West. A beautiful, one hour trip brought us to another world. I highly recommend it.

PA28 vs C172 carb heat question

I teach use of the carb heat in the carburated PA28s exactly the same as in the C172s, following NTSB Recommendations A-89-140 through -142: Therefore, the National Transportation Safety Board recommends that the Federal Aviation Administration: Amend, as necessary, in conjunction with...
