Why not a Sundowner? Another plane thread...

The scheme is a little over the top, but clearly someone cared for the plane quite a bit. And it at least appears to be well kept.

Why not a Sundowner? Another plane thread...

A C177 (probably not R) would also fit the bill. I've considered a few. Problem there is eveyone I talk to tells me to just look at 182's if you are considering the 177. Ugh. I'm horrible when it comes to deciding on cars, planes are even worse. Practically every single one needs to be...

Why not a Sundowner? Another plane thread...

She just doesn't "feel safe" with only one door. Especially with a passenger (daughter) in the back. I'm not a huge fan of the "piper crawl" myself, so I'd like to see if I can find something that checks all the boxes. This one is pretty local (couple hr drive) and looks pretty decent. OTOH...

Why not a Sundowner? Another plane thread...

Mission: PPL Student approaching check ride. I'd like to get a plane of my own, for time building, and short to medium trips (2h - 6h) with my wife and possibly teenage daughter. 99% of my training so far is in a cherokee 140 (160hp conv). Looking around at lots of 172, cherokees, etc. Also...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Not much of an update for me: Weather around here (KSYR area) has been oscilating between horrible and crappy for the last two months for VFR. With work commitments, and various winter illnesses I've manged to get only 2 flights (3.5h) in since November. Last Saturday was beautiful, but I was...

ACS Q&A Study thread for PPL check ride

Good morning everyone - I'd like to start a thread here in the Pilot Training forum for those of us getting close to check ride. There have been a few "quiz me" threads on POA before, what I would like to do is gather those questions here, and ask for some new ones. Anything that would be likely...

    Thoughts on "Best Glide"

I picked up a copy of "Stick and Rudder" recently, and have been reading this classic. The author discusses this exact question, and offers the OPs suggestion as one possible method of action under an engine failure. In fact, he cautions exactly against taking a best-glide to a field and not...

Balloon Pilot Who Killed 16 in Texas on Drugs, Had Many DWIs

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-12-09/balloon-pilot-who-killed-16-was-on-drugs-and-had-five-dwi-raps Just posting a link to the update on this case. I'm not one to call for additional FAA oversight - but wow, how do we as pilots feel about this? Seems like carrying passengers for...

    Frustrated - crappy dam!n weather!

Whew - that gives me a lot to think about when it comes time for instrument training. Update: Got to finally fly again today. 2.5hrs, 1hr under the hood and the rest practicing short/soft field landings and takeoffs at various less-familiar airports around the area (and navigation between...

    Frustrated - crappy dam!n weather!

I guess the grass is always greener... or sunnier.. or whatever :-) How about this, we trade for a few weeks? We had a great fall, with lots of clear-and-a-million days, and now its crap right down to the deck every day... I can't wait for it to at least get cold so maybe it clears up a bit.

    Frustrated - crappy dam!n weather!

I'm all set for my long solo XC, but the weather has been completely crap here for going on 2 weeks- other than one, maybe two days (That I could not go). Just venting. Not looking to get any better anytime soon. Guess I'm going to set up some more dual under the hood time. Question - If my...

    Exam Question.

What everyone said here is all you need to know. Set up a consult with Dr. Bruce, you can do it all by email/phone/fax until the actual medical. He can save you many, many hours, weeks, years of frustration - and like others said - you don't need the medical until you are 16 and solo. So get Dr...

Lack of carb heat leads to crash landing - video from inside cabin

I too wonder about the diagnosis of carb ice - if you read the report on that other link that got posted, they say that the "water detecting putty" was positive for the presence of water in the fuel bowl. Now, the way I understand it carb ice forms in the throat of the carb, downstream from the...

Lack of carb heat leads to crash landing - video from inside cabin

Saw this posted on another forum - so if a dupe here tell me and I'll delete the thread. Most striking to me as a student approaching checkride and analyzing this for my (hopefully) own benefit are a few things: 1) the fact that they wound up in this situation in the first place - but we can...

Got to take a short flight in a gyro this past weekend

Got to take a ride in one of these last weekend: Just a short flight, but I did get to fly for a bit, and the pilot demonstrated how gyroplanes don't really stall.. Just fly along at like 15mph and sink. Was a really cool experience. I'd love to get some more time in one. Apparently these are...

TRSAs... The "big solo XC" coming up and several of them...

Yes, he's a CFI, CFII, AP, AP-IA, and worked ATC for many years. He's got over 9K hours in a variety of types. The specifics I do not know. He's been a good mix of hard-ass and "let him learn the hard way". He has also wanted to make sure I understand how to actually do things with my PPL, like...

Been 50days still can't pass a drug test for thc

I totally agree with you - the question is how does the FAA feel about that? Going to be an interesting few years.

TRSAs... The "big solo XC" coming up and several of them...

Instructor said he definitely wants me to file a flight plan, get a full briefing etc. And I'm good with that - its all good practice and helps me become familiar with all the moving pieces of the FAA. We filed VFR flight plans for both our dual XCs as well, not a big deal and again good practice.
