What do you know now that you didn't know when you got your ticket?

@Jim_R I flew coast to coast and back a few years ago, wondering how much variety I'd really see in terms of ATC norms. I'd categorize airspace as either being busy, or not busy. Generally speaking, all the busy airspace I flew into was handled in much the same way across regions. All of the...

What do you know now that you didn't know when you got your ticket?

My gear speed is 125, but I can do 180'ish while being vectored, which is relevant. They can't give speeds inside the FAF in any case, so the speed prior to that is definitely relevant in my mind. Hence, I let them know I can give them 180 to just shy of the FAF on a precision mins day. It's...

Does not apply for rentals of either type.

Initial Fix, that backs up one of the items in my initial post: So, not before 9am? :)

    IFR Plan under VMC

Tzanev, Imc experience aside, what is your level of confidence in filing a flight plan, picking up a clearance and flying the route under IFR rules in VMC? I'm trying to work out if IMC is your only concern.

    IFR Plan under VMC

Tzanev, literally said above.... I'd recommend spending some time reading through Part 61 and 91. This is fundamental stuff if you hold an instrument rating.

    IFR Plan under VMC

Think about it. How would it possibly work otherwise? In terms of logging the approaches for legal currency, they need to be shot in IMC, or in simulated IMC (foggles with safety pilot), or you can use a suitable flight simulator, flight training device, or aviation training device in IMC. For...

What do you know now that you didn't know when you got your ticket?

That one, apparently, made the rounds and has been discussed in a few places :) I admit that I started the "and also with you" response when controlling on PilotEdge to drive home the point to new students that they didn't need to say it and that their altitude would be a whole lot more...

What do you know now that you didn't know when you got your ticket?

Good call. LOTS of self-service places don't take AMEX or Discover either.

Can a non-current instrument pilot file IFR on a VMC flight?

I'm guesing you mean with plenty of time prior to entering IMC...but I still had to chuckle a little bit :)

What do you know now that you didn't know when you got your ticket?

A spirited discussion in another thread got me thinking about things I've learned over the years. I realized I had never really thought about it. So, what things have you learned, particularly things which aren't in the regs, since you got your ticket? Here's what I've got, no particular...

    File departure procedure?

Tantalum, clearly you're in Socal. If a TEC route exists between the city pairs in question, are you saying that you get something totally different than the TEC route?

    Ifr logging time

Ed, that's fair enough, and if someone is starting with zero prep, then you're probably right. I'm just a little bit exhausted by the notion that all self-study is useless. There's crazy amounts of evidence that it's not. I think I was in a very delicate financial situation during my instrument...

    "Stay with me..." frequency change.

Sick burn, Ed. I was quoting the post above mind and very nearly corrected it to 'one zero thousand' but didn't wanna be a dick.

    Ifr logging time

0% of that happened with a safety pilot, but all of that and more happened in the prep leading up to the formal training, and then some of it happened again with the CFII within those 15 hours. Just as well, because years later, I did have an engine failure at 11k in IMC (got it back at 7500ft...

    Ifr logging time

Did 3 BFR's with 3 different Master CFI's since the ride, specifically focusing on IFR procedures. While we had a good time, they didn't have anything substantial to add. Some of them walked away with a newfound appreciation of DTK, TRK and XTK on the GPS instead of just relying on a needle. We...

    Ifr logging time

I wasn't trying to be controversial, but evidently this has hit a nerve. Apologies that this is a bit of a long post, there's a few things to walk through. To be clear, this isn't about me personally, or any abilities I may or may not have. I'm not delusional enough to think I'm anything...

    "Stay with me..." frequency change.

"level at ten thousand" are four words that can be skipped. No need to give your altitude when you are, by definition, speaking to the same controller. And yes, every word counts on a bad day at New York tracon. The frequency is routinely packed with planes, such that you don't even have a...

    Ifr logging time

Well, you could fly with an instructor for 300 hours instead of 40....would that be better, too? Maybe make it 1500 just to be safe? I'm simply challenging the assertion that pilots should, by default, ignore the option of building time with other pilots and instead do all 40 hours with a CFII...

    Ifr logging time

My point stands. Even I had a more confident CFII, I don't see how it would've changed much. You said instrument students should fly the whole 40 hours with a CFII. I don't think that statement is always true, regardless of how good the instructor is.
