Help me understand BasicMed and and conditions other than the "big three" for a new pilot.

Besides Sport class, you can also go fly gliders, and get your private pilot glider certificate. All you need to do for that is attest that you don't have any health issue that could affect your ability to fly safely.

FAA Issues General Aviation Medical Rule

Not sure if this has already been mentioned, but if you intend to fly to Canada (or Mexico, Bahamas, etc.) even once, this entire new rule is completely useless to you. Am I missing something?

Robinson R22 time for $120 dry

Only 45 minutes to Chilhowee? They have a gorgeous ridge. If I were you, I'd give them a try, e.g. intro lesson. But if you get hooked, don't blame me. :)

Robinson R22 time for $120 dry

How far are you from Chilhowee? Eagleville? The best ridge in the world passes through Tennessee...

Robinson R22 time for $120 dry

I would not trust any hard figure for achieving PPL-H, either basic or add-on. This is similar to PPL rating where virtually all flight schools quote a hypothetical figure based on minimums that nobody achieves. If you do want real numbers, ask them for contact info for recent grads, and ask...

Robinson R22 time for $120 dry

$300/hr wet for R-22 is definitely high. You can get the R-44 for just slightly more in some places (note the cash or debit discount), and $250/hr R-22 wet in others. You can toss in the CFI-H in the above R-22 price for just $25 extra, BTW. Obviously location matters, but for a batch of hours...

Robinson R22 time for $120 dry

Their wet rate is not lower than some other established FBO's. Their dry rate "sale" is slightly below that, depending on fuel cost. But IMO the number one criterion in selecting a helicopter rental facility is the quality of their maintenance (I have seen quite a range), and in this case I have...

    Commercial crosswind

It has 4,800'. I suspect you'd have considered that "long" only a few months ago. :)

Finally come around to the idea of a Panel mount GPS, but..

I must be missing something. Before the digital/GPS age, I used to pay Jepps a few hundred bucks (don't recall the final price) for just my part of the country. Now you can pay Garmin just $300 for complete US approach plus enroute ("navigation") coverage (for a year). You can also get (and...

    Disabled and flying.

Even if she is a troll, that shouldn't deter other real disabled people from flying.

    Disabled and flying.

Lots of people fly without legs (or leg function) at all, let alone poor motor skills there. And some of them are very accomplished, could probably fly circles around most people on this board.

    Thoughts on "Best Glide"

My own Altitude Hold A/P (to which I linked above) has both VS hold and Alt hold. You could theoretically hold "0 VS", but I am pretty sure that would start drifting immediately. In any case, I never use the VS mode, as I noted above. OTOH, my Altitude Hold is excellent, with very gentle...

    Thoughts on "Best Glide"

MAKG, this is the unit I have, which definitely has an "Altitude Hold" function (and no "pitch hold"), which is what I use it for exclusively (I do only manual approaches, so I don't use the glide slope mode, and I find the vertical speed mode to be next to useless, so virtually never use that)...

    Thoughts on "Best Glide"

No, it's definitely altitude hold (not aware of an A/P with "pitch hold", though they might exist, for all I know). IOW, normally after a deviation, it starts gradually correcting back to the "hold" altitude, but when it got over 1000' and kept climbing, I gave up on it and took over manually...

    Thoughts on "Best Glide"

Last week I got into an amazing wave in my single engine Cessna while on altitude hold. I was a bit busy looking outside (surveying terrain for future glider flights), and by the time I glanced at my altimeter I noticed I had climbed hundreds of feet, eventually over a thousand! This was all on...

    Cessna 210 Crash - Payson, AZ - 4 Dead

I think they often link to what they consider "relevant" news articles published about the accident in the mainstream media, as "background material". In this case that's what they did, transcluding the article from ABC news. I see your point that it makes the Kathryn record appear cheesy, but I...

Sure, we are all human, and all make mistakes (myself very much so). But the safe pilot, while realizing each time he/she takes off might be the last time, also makes sure to have multiple options in case the fit hits the shan. Any pilot that doesn't tell him/herself just before takeoff, "today...

I said "meteor", not "meteorite", because it's impossible to be hit by space object that hits the earth's surface first (which is the definition of meteorite) and I didn't want to exclude getting hit while flying (which would be an overlap of causes, I suppose :)). The point I was making is that...

Nobody said accidents will completely disappear if you fly safely, but they can be easily reduced such that your chances of dying while flying will be vastly smaller compared to all the other lethal dangers in your life.
