    Question regarding error in altitude

I can't imagine any (sane) pilot who flies single pilot single engine IFR in IMC (including low approaches) not having in his/her aircraft logbook the latest deviation sheet along with the pitot-static leak, transponder check, etc. When you fly IMC, you trust your life (and that of your pax) to...

    Question regarding error in altitude

I assume you are joking, but can't see the humor. Every biennial pitot-static transponder check produces one of those sheets, which is attached to your aircraft log. If it's out of tolerance or missing, you can't fly IFR. The "deviation" measured is the difference between your readout vs. the...

    Anyone Still Use Airnav?

AirNav every cross-country, but no subscription (didn't know there was one).

    I didn't know Malibu's were this impressive.

With the 25000' cruising height quoted in the op and a 12:1 glide ratio, that's 60 miles range after losing an engine (zero wind), enough to find a good spot, if not a nice runway.

Passed the IR written today...what a ridiculous test.

Hey, I was trying to be kind. :)

Passed the IR written today...what a ridiculous test.

Bear in mind that nobody at the FAA (to my knowledge) routinely flies single pilot single engine non-FIKI IFR, in IMC to low approaches etc. This reflects on their institutional mindset and the types of questions (and general emphasis) you see on the knowledge tests. But that's government, and...

Aviation is my religion - you?

One man's "truth" is another man's delusion. But per the #1 rule, I agree to let it go.

Aviation is my religion - you?

The first (intelligent) rule about religion is that there is no point arguing about it. The reason is that it conveys something different to each of us. Therefore, your criteria for "what's a religion" are exactly that, yours. And I can completely understand and accept that to you, organized...

Aviation is my religion - you?

Some would argue that organized religion is, to a large extent, delusional. I think flying (and more specifically soaring) is the closest I personally could ever get to a "spiritual" experience without drugs.

    Cool CFI in Oz

Loses engine, but not his nerve. I wish I could act like that when the "donkey quits". http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-09-03/pilot-makes-emergency-landing-in-light-aircraft/4931182

Any reason not to switch my nav data scription from Jepp to Garmin?

I'd just make sure it's Class 10, as I do for other apps. My avionics guy once told me Garmin insists you only use their approved cards, but I have never had an issue using generic ones.

Any reason not to switch my nav data scription from Jepp to Garmin?

Salted peanuts are unhealthy. The ones I buy are healthier and cost a bit more. Here is a micro SD card that works great and costs less than $7. Garmin also throws in two of them with the purchase of a GTN (or at least did with mine). Do you need more than two? In any case, I think it's a pretty...

    Documenting every hour

This. For your own use, the sky is the limit, the more the merrier and the more you'll benefit from it. Pilots have a list of "useless things" like fuel in the truck, runway behind, altitude above, etc. You can add "videos not taken or preserved" to that list. But as Everskyward says, don't...

    Documenting every hour

I think you are doing fine to record everything you can. After all, it costs nothing, and can help you find and focus on specific problems after the fact, as well as enjoy seeing your progress over time. You can always go back and erase or edit things later on, but that's extra work. Just like...

    AOPA WELCOMES DRONE PILOTS

I hope that was tongue-in-cheek. The 99s are a great organization which promotes and supports women in aviation. As long as women are underrepresented, it makes sense to promote them. Same goes for BPA (Black Pilots of America). If you love aviation, as hopefully most here do, you should enjoy...

Any reason not to switch my nav data scription from Jepp to Garmin?

How is that a problem? You download the data into a spare card (they cost peanuts nowadays plus Garmin gives you two upfront) and bring that to the plane. Take the old one back for reprogramming next cycle. What am I missing?

    IMC requirement for CFII

Not to disagree about the value of spin training (I got mine inadvertently on my second lesson as a student pilot when my stall entry was uncoordinated :)), but at least you don't expect a commercial pilot (except maybe an aerobatics instructor) to spin on a regular basis. You do expect an...

    GTN databases

The Nav package is the only one legally needed to fly IFR. If you have the rest on your tablet, you should be good to go. I personally like the peace of mind and convenience that comes with the more expensive package that includes terrain, safe taxi and obstacles, in case my (two) tablets fail.

Vesna Vulovic, stewardess who survived 33,000ft fall, dies

This story is not so straightforward. There is at least one seemingly reliable source that claims that she didn't fall out of great heights, but that her airliner was shot down low. There was a thread here about that with a link, when she died last year, which I'll try to find. Edit: here is the...

Harrison Ford lands on a taxiway @ SNA

"Ford is revered as an excellent pilot" -- despite all those crashes and near misses. I guess being a celeb or US Senator is all you need nowadays to be "revered" while flying like Mr. Magoo.
