Extra Readings for Commercial Student Pilots

Hey guys. I'm looking to put together a list of some readings for my students and I was hoping to get some input. I want a list of about 10-15 themes/topics to discuss outside of the typical "here's what is in our lesson today" discussion. Most of my guys are commercial multi students (all...

    "Bugging" Your Heading

Definitely tried to explain it in reasonable terms already. I don't think it a lack of value that they see. I think its more just task saturation that they are struggling with. To be clear, I don't actually yell at them... but, when I say "bug your heading" five times and they still haven't...

    "Bugging" Your Heading

Perfect! Thanks for sharing! Makes my point exactly. Also looks like there's a Singapore Airlines flight that had the same issue.

    "Bugging" Your Heading

On top of taking off from the right runway, it helps you land on the right runway too. During instrument training, my instructor and myself both lost situational awareness (was told by approach and tower three different runways). Ended up turning final for the wrong runway... of course this...

    "Bugging" Your Heading

I think it's super important even if they don't forget their heading that they bug it. It's a resource and it takes two seconds at most. Could save them a PD, could prevent landing on the wrong runway, could keep them from CFIT into a mountain... who knows? But, it also sets the standard and...

    "Bugging" Your Heading

Just curious, how many of you "bug" your heading in some way, shape, or form while flying? If you started in an airplane that didn't have this capability and now have a heading bug, do you use it? My guys are transitioning from planes without heading bugs into a G500 system and they can't seem...

    MEI Question

By the way, looks like you're out of HIO? What do you typically fly out there?

    MEI Question

It really just depends on what I can get given my density altitude. I would recommend you do it at full power to get the full affects of asymmetrical thrust; otherwise, they don't get a real feel for it. So pitch for altitude and full power. Anything less than blue line and I would be nervous...

    MEI Question

I make my guys do steep turns into the dead engine at altitude so they know that a) it's possible and b) how it handles. I don't ever expect them to do this in a real emergency though. Update: I would even challenge you to think about why the engine failed. Did you just take off for pattern...

    Continuing Education--what's your favorite?

Hey guys! Just looking to see what you all use for continuing to build a pilot knowledge base. I don't really want to read the PHAK again so I'm curious what medium/website/book/etc. you've learned a lot from.

    Accelerated training....where in western US?

Looks like a couple of people have mentioned ATP. I did their program and it was ok. When I was deciding where I wanted to do my training, they said I could be done as fast as I wanted to be; they said three months from instrument to CFI/CFII/MEI was completely doable. This was the biggest...

How to Teach Multi-Tasking Skills; Multi-Engine Airplane

Looks like quite a few people have responded to your question so I won't reiterate what they said. IMO, if you can't safely fly the airplane using your "flow", then it's not a flow. I'm a big believer that you can fly just about any GA aircraft without a checklist safely as long as you have a...

How to Teach Multi-Tasking Skills; Multi-Engine Airplane

Sorry guys. Just been busy. Yea, private single to comm-multi. Quite the jump IMO. Single was in a non-complex AC.

How to Teach Multi-Tasking Skills; Multi-Engine Airplane

What are these competing tasks that you're referencing? That's exactly what I'm looking for! The only thing I can think of is act like tower and require him to make radio calls, but even that pales in comparison to maintaining heading, altitude, airspeed, SA, etc. when actually in the airplane.

How to Teach Multi-Tasking Skills; Multi-Engine Airplane

I'm really aiming to have them understand why we do what we do. So far in fact, in group grounds, once one student understands in English I'll have him explain/discuss the why in their language and then have each of the other students tell me the why in English to confirm they understand. My...

How to Teach Multi-Tasking Skills; Multi-Engine Airplane

Sure. So these guys are somewhat fresh out of their PPL. They should be able to do simple things like slow flight, traffic patterns, constant speed climbs/descents, go around, etc.. But they are really struggling with simple things like overshooting/forgetting about their heading because they...

How to Teach Multi-Tasking Skills; Multi-Engine Airplane

Hey guys! So I'm currently teaching mostly multi-engine stuff and my guys seem to really fall behind the airplane. From what I can tell, they just can't seem to do the flows, talk, and fly the airplane at the same time. I've worked with them on the sim quite a bit, and they can recite the...

How to Teach Future Airline Pilots

Sweet. Thanks for the advice! Any bad habits that you consistently see? Or knowledge areas that are lacking? Asking more for myself now.

How to Teach Future Airline Pilots

Agreed. But without a doubt, the training is and should be tailored towards the types of flying they are doing. Should I touch on everything in the ACS? Yes. In addition to this, does every (maybe I should say most?) CFIs talk about stuff that is outside of the ACS? Yes. My question is...
