    Precision Power Off Landing

Recommendation? Keep a kneeboard with all your numbers for each practice landing. Wind, RPM, speed, altitude. Be crazy precise. Count seconds from power off to turn, count seconds on each leg of the rectangle downwind-base-final, count when each notch of flaps goes in. Count time starting at the...

    Positive ATC Stories

Early on in my private pilot days, one time I felt my fingers tingling at 9500 feet and thought that maybe I was hypoxic. Turns out I was a little tense being above the clouds and had been death gripping the controls. When I started feeling the pulse racing of a mild panic attack, I called...

Buying 1st Plane vs. Flying Club?

Welcome! If I may suggest a 4th option, what about buying then renting to several people you know well who will take good care of your plane? That way, you always get first dibs, you know who has the bird and when, and you may make more money than a leaseback and have less maintenance hassle...

Another CAPS deployment - SR22 New Mexico

@CC268 , as long as you have a plan or two in mind, and have your target go-no go altitude set, that and a thorough preflight are about all you can do. I hope it never happens to you.

Another CAPS deployment - SR22 New Mexico

Make a plan anyway - your very best option - and prepare to fly it some day. Maybe you make all your departures at Vx for extra safety margin? It's all marsh and trees on the takeoff end of my home drome, and I have 2 or 3 spots I've mentally rehearsed for in case of engine failure below 600...

Why I love helping people learn to fly.

When I got my private, I had no idea I would end up getting a CFI ticket. Now I have my sights on an ATP. And yep, watching a zero-time student grow into a confident pilot is pretty magical. Even the anxiously-waiting-for-the-post-solo-phone-call part.

How fuel efficient is your airplane - REMADE

@forseth11 - thanks for that. I have an hour in an M20J from a few years back - I really enjoyed it. I teach in my plane, and that helps it pay for itself. Probably wouldn't do that in a Mooney. But it's a fun thought. :)

What to do with a bunch of money?

...and then when you buy, buy multifamily. You might even be able to cash-out refi your current home and keep it, letting renters pay the note down while your new multifamily tenants pay your new mortgage.

@Hank S - now you guys reeeally have me thinking Mooney. 9gph in cruise? Would you mind sharing your average annual maintenance costs?

I've listened to a zillion, too - and heard Doug White land that King Air a bunch.

    How cheap is your airplane

Hmmm. Two ways to think about that: I'd argue for using deprecion as the primary metric. I own a 1971 C172L. Just bought it for a few grand below a reasonable market price. It will likely hold value for a decade. In that sense, the capital sunk into the plane is locked up, so you can use that...

Real life save: how'd he fix it?

I just sent this link to one of my students with a few questions. I thought it might be useful for any student pilot here who cares to answer. In the recording above, what attitude was the plane in, and what were the two things the controller suggested doing? Does it matter what order the...
