Getting your loved ones to fly with you?

my girlfriend's requirement to fly with me is to not ask about weight... we flew to Fredericksburg a while back and I asked her her weight so I could calculate how much she could buy at the markets there... her response was, if I have to ask her weight then we will drive everywhere.. so...

    To kbhm - Birmingham alabamee

Thanks for the input and tips! I'll be going for the bowl game and this will be a great opportunity to make an east bound cross country where I'll see trees instead of desert. I'll be using flight following, if available, and printing out the airport diagram instead of just pulling it up...

Where are some must see places in Texas?

Wherever you go call ahead to verify they have fuel. I landed in Sonora a few months ago at dusk and their tanks were dry. Luckily I had enough daylight and fuel in the wings to make it to junction.

    To kbhm - Birmingham alabamee

If weather holds up for the first weekend of the new year I'm planning to fly from Houston to Birmingham. I have several issues so your input is appreciated. First off, I'm around 80 hours and vfr only in an archer II pa28-180 In Birmingham there is only class c kbhm and about 10...

Air tour/flight schools in tourist areas

Flying with a cfi in an exotic location may no be as much of a cost savings vs an air tour when compared to taking one in New York but hopefully I can find out. Flying in Europe generally may be more expensive bu maybe a tourist air tour would also be more expensive and using a flight school...

Air tour/flight schools in tourist areas

Pinstripe's post about using a flight school for an air tour of NYC's Hudson River thereby saving money vs the expensive 15 minute tours offered to tourists started me thinking about other places. I'm thinking of traveling to either Hawaii, Greece, Spain, or turkey next year and figure...

    Mile high club

When dr Ruth used to do her radio show, then her tv show, she would get questions where the caller would start giggling or crack up laughing after asking a question. She would answer the question anyway and explained that the caller may have meant it as a joke but some listeners may want to...

    Huson river flight

Son of a monkey's uncle. I was in NYC last month and balked at paying $360 for two of us to take a 15 minute helicopter tour so we took the Staten Island ferry. It didn't occur to me to call local flight schools. A 172 would hande my gf and cfi and I no problem. If my team makes it to...

    A good timer recommendation?

Thanks for the input! At first glance the Asa timer looks good but the negative review nixed it. Ill head to target tomorrow. And already tried the on board analog clock and that didn't work.

    A good timer recommendation?

The ironman watch thread prompted this question. What is a good timer to use for keeping track of turns that: 1. I can use for the rest of my flying career, not just for training and check ride. 2. Large numbers My plane has an analog clock and as confident as I was that I...

Night flying instead of wearing a hood for ifr?

Thanks for the input! I'm in Houston so theoretically I could fly over the gulf. But I won't. So foggles at night it shall be.

Night flying instead of wearing a hood for ifr?

I'm about to start training for ifr and wonder if flying at night can eliminate having to use a hood for all those many hours required. Since it's getting close to winter it'll get date earlier and I can train after work.

    Aviation jobs?

What do pipeline inspectors require? Except for emergency pipeline issues I would imagine inspections could wait for vfr conditions so instrument rating may not be necessary. Question would that pay more than the $120 an hour it costs to rent my clubs plane. And since I'd be...

    The ewwww factor of flying

Went up for the first time in a month and the first time for my sons ever. I wear clarity aloft and I bought halos for my son. After finishing our flights for the day and putting our gear away we realized we have to remember to wash our ears better in the shower. Just a little...

    XM or ADS-B?

I used our clubs stratus and give it a 5 The little weather there was looked like colored lego blocks. Since I had seen weather using foreflight while on the ground via wifi in hi-res I was disappointed in the difference but still happy to have some weather vs no weather. There was...

Just made the whole thing worth it...

Mine happened today taking my two sons for a $100 burger. My 11 year old was scared before the flight (first time in a small plane) but felt confident enough during preflight to not veto the flight. My 8 year old realized he didn't have to use oxygen despite a family member's hysterical...

    is flying relaxing for you?

my last flight was over labor day and i'm wanting to get up soon but life simply gets in the way sometimes.... however..... I was dead tired on my xcountry both after landing when I got there and landing when I got home. what with thinking about fuel, density altitude, bumps in the air...

    Recent ER visit

My dad had heart disease that eventually led to two heart attacks and a double bypass. Even though that's not what called him away permanently every time I feel a flutter or a pain in my chest or a phantom one in my left arm I stop and think for a bit. Turns out they are nothing but how does...

    Commercial vs fly yourself

Thanks all for your input! Convenience is definitely a big plus for ga. Unfortunately, I have yet to wake up on a Sunday morning and spur of the moment decide to fly somewhere for brunch. But if I did it would definitely beat commercial prices for getting where I'm going. So that's...

    Commercial vs fly yourself

The topic about the 200kt six seater had someone mention that airlines were invented for a reason and it got me wondering what most on here consider their cutoff point between flying themselves vs flying commercial. I live in Houston so I'm pretty centric to a good chunk of the country. My...
