Lost In Space reboot -- anybody watching?

I just finished it last night too. I agree with you, although I might be even more critical of it. Most of the dialogue is pretty weak. And there are so many things that don't make technical sense. It's annoying because it's not that hard to come up with details that would make a little more...

    TSA CLEARANCE FOR ALIEN PILOTS

Best of luck OP, and I hope this thread doesn't put you off posting here in future. You mentioned that your immigration attorney couldn't help because it's not an immigration issue. What you've found here is that most people here can't help because it is kind of an immigration issue, and no one...

Flying in the pattern which is the best option?

Did he give any explanation for this? It's far from obvious (to me anyway) why being closer to the runway makes you more likely to 'lose control'.

First cross country solo...and a big mistake!

It was a Bendix King, I think the model is a KLN 94 or something like that.

Why would a CFI not declare in this situation?

Ah, The Edge...great film! But you forgot the last part - the one thing that they didn't do to save themselves: declaring an emergency! OK just joking, it was "thinking" :) While we're at it, best scene:

Why would a CFI not declare in this situation?

Is it just me or is the engine running roughly? It doesn't sound right to me and there seems to be a lot of vibration. Also, when they start the engine and he notes the oil pressure is "coming up slowly" - is that normal for a plane?

    How safe is flying?

When I started flying I was concerned about this too. The more I watched documentaries about crashes and read NTSB reports, the more reassured I felt. If you know your take off requirements, do a preflight check (do you have enough fuel, and is the control lock removed?) and stay out of IMC...

German student seeking help on how to do a license in the us

And the visa needs to come before that. Also, note that flight schools can give discover flights and ground school without TSA approval. But since it takes months to get approval there might not be not much point in doing a discover flight first.

German student seeking help on how to do a license in the us

No. You have to have the solo written test done before you can fly solo. This usually happens after around 10-20 hours of flying experience (10 is the minimum allowed). You need to have the official written test done before you are eligible to do the final test (known as the checkride). The...

German student seeking help on how to do a license in the us

Yes you need the medical before solo. But it doesn't serve as your student license - you have to apply for that separately.

German student seeking help on how to do a license in the us

You can do both simultaneously. There are 3 major milestones for the theory side of things: * pre-solo written test - this has to be done before you can do your first solo flight (typically in between 10 and 20 hours) * official written test - this just has to be done before your checkride...

Plane down in Indiana (only minor injuries)

Just came across this. I wonder if the fuel problem they mention was of the "we don't have any" variety. More importantly, why would you land gear up in that situation? It looks like they were properly aligned with the furrows and everything.

First cross country solo...and a big mistake!

Thanks for all the input everyone. All great advice. I do want to do more dead reckoning flights (only did one so far, my first x/c). I think my instructor is more concerned with getting me used to ATC comms so we've been going with flight following + gps for everything after the first one...

German student seeking help on how to do a license in the us

That's not true, generally. You don't have to have a visa that's specific to flight training, or even one that specific to students. But there are some vias that disallow it. Here's some general info on what kinds of visas allow you do do full various kinds of courses...

German student seeking help on how to do a license in the us

The TSA program mentioned earlier costs $130 per application and the first application takes a few months. It's then good for a year, but only for one specific flight school and one training program (so if you change schools or if you complete your PPL and want to transition to more training...

First cross country solo...and a big mistake!

I have a tablet (not an iPad but Android so I have to use Garmin Pilot) but I haven't been making much use of it. I didn't use it on this flight at all. The reason being that I can't find a decent way to mount it. I bought a RAM yoke mount only to discover that the yoke has some kind of...

First cross country solo...and a big mistake!

You guys nailed it! And this helped me solve the big mystery of how I ended up so far off course, despite keeping a close eye on the GPS. I was not zoomed in enough, and if I had been that would have helped. But I didn't worry about it at the time, because I had something much more useful (I...

First cross country solo...and a big mistake!

That's a good point. By the time I was close enough that I knew something was wrong, I was looking outside very carefully. The problem was that by that time, I was so close that I needed to scan a much wider area to see it. Leading up to that point, I probably was concentrating too much on the GPS.

First cross country solo...and a big mistake!

Today I did my first cross country solo. It was to a class D airport that I've been to before with my instructor. Flight following handed me off to the tower a little later than I expected, but that was ok. I checked in with the controller and he asked my position (approaching from the north...

    [NA] Cordless drill

When I needed to buy one a few years ago I watched and read all the reviews I could and ended up buying an 18v Makita. It was one of very few (or maybe the only one) that has metal gears. It came with 2 batteries too. Wasn't the cheapest and I haven't used it enough to really put it to the test...
