During the winter I'm usually 4,500-5,500. This time of year I'll usually go up to 7,500+ to get above the clouds as long as I know I can get back down. Had a 200 nm flight last week that kept me at 4,500 and it was bumpy the whole way.

I'll second Brainerd and East Gull. Some other good ones are Walker & Perham, in MN and Superior & Siren, in WI. I'm pretty sure the courtesy car/Suburban at Perham is usually buried in snow this time of year, but it's an easy drive to Zorbaz once things thaw out.
