    Commander thoughts

I owned part of an arrow 2 for many years. I got my complex in an arrow 1. There is a big difference in back seat room between them. Most of my time is actually in arrows. That is another possibility, although I'd like something a little nicer I think. That said, I am curious how the rear...

    Commander thoughts

Wow, you guys are really selling me on the advantages of the commander. Nice video too. I am going to have to look into this a little harder. Also, the 182 is still in contention. I agree they do a lot of things well, and I like that just about any shop can work on them and the engines are...

    Commander thoughts

I did read about those super commander modifications. Looks very interesting albeit expensive. Thank you for the helpful information. I will try to contact Judy. BTW...I haven't seen anything on pitch authority in what I have read. The stabilizer looks kind of small in pictures, and the...

    Commander thoughts

I've been getting more serious about getting my own plane recently, and like many others trying to narrow down the list. I want something more capable than a 172 or warrior that is comfortable for my family of 4, but not overboard for operating costs or maintenance considering most of the time...

Help me pick a plane (UPDATE: PICKED ONE)

I am in a similar situation to you and was about to post a similar OP-Ed post when I came across this. I have most my time in arrows and feel very comfortable with them. Trouble I find with most on the market is they are most often used as trainers, so they have high TT and most likely a lot...

What plane are you daydreaming about today?

Since I first saw it, I fell in love with the DA62. Every year at Oshkosh my wife and I go drool over it. Looks great, seats 7, ~180knts on 15gph of jet fuel. Too bad I will probably never have $1.4M to drop on it.

Best accelerated instrument training in Chicago area

Thanks for the mostly helpful feedback. I will start calling around to see what makes the most sense for me. The 3CK flight school looks pretty interesting actually. It is about an hour drive from my house, but maybe worth it. Has anyone used Blue Skies Aviation at 3CK? For James331: 10...

Best accelerated instrument training in Chicago area

Pretty sure they left Dupage a year or two back. On their website, they don't list an IL location anymore.

Best accelerated instrument training in Chicago area

Anyone have experience with accelerated instrument training in the Chicago area? I recently moved to the western suburbs and my knowledge test expires this summer. I'd like to do a 10 day course and get it done as opposed to how I did my private (It took a long time). I see some options at 3CK...

Flying clubs / partnerships in the area

How is the maintenance of the aircraft? It is probably hard to enforce safe piloting for individuals of a large club, but they should be able to maintain their aircraft. I have not had any issues in 5 years of flying my arrow (knock on wood), but I tend to be pretty conservative in my flying...

Flying clubs / partnerships in the area

Thanks for the input. I was surprised to see that there aren't clubs at ARR considering it is relatively big. IAA does appear to have a really nice set of aircraft, albeit a bit pricey. Considering the low cost of Fox plus the fact insurance is included, it might be worth a shot initially. I...

Flying clubs / partnerships in the area

I am changing jobs and moving to the Chicago area. As a result, I just sold my share of an Arrow in Iowa, and now I need to find new wings. I will be living in west St. Charles. It looks like Dupage, Dekalb, and Aurora are reasonable possibilities near my house. Dupage is less than 20min...

    When was your first scare?

My first heart stopping moment came during my first solo cross country. It was a warm October day, and I was already on edge considering I was venturing out on my own for the first time. I had about 44 hours in the book at the time and while cruising along at 3500, I saw a green ribbon like...

    Ammeter reading high

I believe it goes to zero, although I haven't directly observed that. Another guy in the club flew with the alternator off to avoid overcharging, so I assume he saw it go to zero with the alternator off.

    Ammeter reading high

We just had our plane avionics upgraded with a PMA8000G, GTN650, and GTX345. We have flown it several times since the upgrade, and I noticed that the ammeter is almost fully deflected most of the time including when the avionics are switched off. The reading is over 70 amps! This is the Piper...

    Updating GPS...CDI question

We are looking into upgrading our stack now that the original equipment is getting a bit flaky. I am getting some quotes for a GTN650 and GMA340. The first quote I got included a GI-106B CDI. My question is can I use the existing CDI that is connected to my KX-155? It may also be connected...

Rental / Dual time in Phoenix area

I will be taking a business trip to the Phoenix area in a few weeks, and I am thinking about renting a plane and getting a little dual mountain flying in. I live in Iowa so all of my flying has been flat land flying. Any suggestions for which airport/FBO to use? Who has the best...

    Oshkosh first timer

I am heading to Oshkosh for the first time tomorrow. We are drive-in camping and expect to get in about 9pm. I didn't buy a daily ticket for tomorrow considering we will be in late. Any tips on things to do when I get in? Do they have a discounted ticket to get in for the last hour or two...

    When to abort takeoff

I aborted once during training. After a full stop, I advanced throttle, and RPM went to 2600, but acceleration was a bit weak, and there was a little surging. I aborted and returned to the ramp to do a runup. Turns out I lost a mag.
