    L88 (New Cuyama) Airport Help

I hope it succeeds - it's a shame for a perfectly good airport to go to waste. One reason to go there in the past was to eat at the Buckhorn (walking distance from the AP). I see that it is still there - with one reviewer saying that it is better than ever, with new owners and extensive...

Flying an LSA cross-country VFR. Any suggestions on my routing?

IMHO he'd have to have really rotten luck with the weather for it to take so long. My last such flight (Mid NC to CA Coast) took less than 48 hours ET, including overnights in TN and NM. In my case it was "Follow I-40" most of the way, with a detour South to avoid the ABQ Class B. The cruise...

What was your earliest national/international memory?

When I was in college there was a Burger Chef and a McDonalds side by side near my home. I used to get my burgers at BC and French Fries at McD! Those were the days Dave

What was your earliest national/international memory?

Start of the Korean War. Also, the biggest blizzard I remember happened the following winter (they brought in National Guard Tanks to punch through the drifts). Another memory from that era was the death of Stalin. Me: a 1944 Model. Dave

    Taxiing an Unregistered Aircraft

Long time ago, but there was a guy who started a new FBO at the local airport. He was adding to his fleet (probably leasebacks), and picked up a twin that he was anxious to try out. Apparently the insurance hadn't been worked out right away, so he decided to do a few high speed taxi runs down...

    Password Win 10

Yup. Yesterday Windows attempted to force me to switch from Google to Edge as my browser of choice. The apparent only way out was to kill Edge in Task Manager. I've tried Linux - but on an outdated (slow) laptop. So far I haven't been impressed with it. Dave.

    Brake job cost?

I bought Detroit Axle rotors. So far they are doing fine (and I drive over a mountain pass and back every workday).

    Brake job cost?

Steel Seal. Not cheap - but does the job. The company claims that the fix is permanent. We shall see... (but IMHO it has paid for itself even if it failed tomorrow). Dave Dave.

    Brake job cost?

A couple of years ago I replaced front pads and rotors on my daily driver - and was amazed to find the rotors for only $11 each on Amazon. Sure enough they warped (but it took awhile). A couple of months ago I replaced the rotors only with an upgraded pair of drilled and grooved rotors for...

Lake Michigan - Would you cross it in a single?

I did the first half of my PPL training on the East shore of Lake Michigan - long ago. In those days the standing joke around there went something like this: Pilot to Controller: My engine just quit over the middle of Lake Michigan! - What shall I do? Controller to Pilot: Repeat after me...

Well, I certainly found the most expensive way to get to Florida.

Or of the careless Co-Qwner who did likewise, wiped up the mess - and didn't tell anybody. So the next to fly it (me) was greeted by streaks of oil running up the windshield. Nowhere near as bad as the OP - but unsettling nonetheless. So I landed ASAP, had a mechanic wash out the engine...

    Cheap international cellphone service

I second that. Check out the TMobile Magenta Plans: https://www.t-mobile.com/coverage/roaming I have my whole family on TMobile, and we have used it pretty much seamlessly within, to, from, and between many countries. We generally use Whatsapp to call each other - and that generally works...

    Windows ugh

My greetings from Microsoft on Christmas Day was to find an Edge window open - and a sub-window announcing "this program runs better in Microsoft Edge" - or words to that effect. Not sure how I got to that point (perhaps accidentally). There was one choice: Continue to Edge. Couldn't decline...

    Pucker Factor

One occasionally sees a tongue in cheek reference to the title phenomenon while perusing Aviation Forums. Sort of an "inside Joke" type of thing. Apparently this is well enough known to merit an article about it in Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pucker_factor Now it appears that some...

[Na]Who is traveling internationally these days?

Went to Ukraine in May/June for our son's wedding. All things considered the trip came off well, and we had no unusual problems. Getting tested before flights was a drag - but we found it easier to do (and cheaper) over there for the return flight. Another downer was the requirement to buy...

    Jacking a 182

I have one of the "Jack Points" described by others in this thread - and it works fine. Don't know if it is the Cessna part or not - I bought it used. Before I had it I would clamp wooden blocks onto the gear leg with a big C-Clamp - and apply the jack to the bottom block. That worked fine as...

Airliner sitting on it's tail? How does this happen?

Once upon a time I flew to Europe (Amsterdam, IIRC) on a "Combi" airplane. This arrangement has passengers in the front and cargo in the back. After landing and taxiing to the gate they announced "everybody stay in your seats; we have a herd of cattle in the back that must be unloaded before...

Shopping for a pocket sized digital camera

Good advice. It happens that I have one of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS50 cameras similar to what the OP mentions. Great camera, and when I need the abilities of that zoom lens I make sure to have it with me. OTOH, it takes an intentional photographic expedition to bring that about. As other have...

    T-Hangar Overhead Lighting Suggestions

Probably not a bad idea. I have a couple of 4-Lamp suspended ceiling fixtures in my garage - and one of the ballasts went out. I decided that it was time to go LED, so bought what I thought were direct replacement tubes. They are - except the type I bought require a functional ballast. Instead...
