    Wind gusts on final

I might be on the verge of understanding...thanks everyone!

    Wind gusts on final

I understand that there would be an affect on the airplane moving through the air, but don't understand how this relates to the aircraft stalling. If I'm flying my approach in a 172 at 65kts indicated, and it's calm winds, and out of nowhere I get a 10kt straight on gust...I would still be...

    Wind gusts on final

Maybe I'm getting indicated and true airspeed turned around. True airspeed would decrease, but indicated would not, correct?

    Wind gusts on final

I guess I'm confused on why my airspeed would change. If I'm flying in a 20 knot headwind, my airspeed isn't affected...my ground speed would be. Why would a gust be any different? Maybe something is getting mixed up in my mind.

    Wind gusts on final

I have a question that I keep thinking about in regard to gusts on final. It confuses me when someone says they will fly a higher approach speed to hedge against a strong gust that may cause a stall - my question is why a gust would matter? If all the wing knows is the mass of air it is flying...

    How to find safety pilot

I thought you couldn't log XC time when you are acting as safety pilot? I'm aware of all the nuances of acting PIC, sole manipulator of the controls and all that, but I've always hear that only one person can log XC time. Is that wrong?

    Fellow pilots in DC area

I live in Vienna, and fly out of HEF...wouldn't mind driving to another airport like GAI or JYO to fly with someone else if the chance came up. I signed up for the DC listserv, thanks for the suggestion John T!

    Fellow pilots in DC area

Hi all, I'm not sure the best way to go about this, but I am interested in meeting/flying with pilots in the Washington, DC area. I have joined a club, and am involved with the civil air patrol (but both haven't amounted to much flying with other pilots). I am a certificated pilot, but...

    iPad vs. Nexus 7

Great information here...I have been bouncing back and forth between the iPad or the Nexus 7. One quick question...if I were to get the nexus 7, does the fact that I won't have a wireless connection in the air pose any issues? I know the GPS signal should be unaffected, but what about the...

    Nerves

I've been a private pilot for all of a month, and still get nervous when I go up. It's mostly knowing that I am responsible for people I care about, in a situation only I can control. The first few flights, I only went to the practice area with other people on-board, then I planned a cross...

    Dependency on GPS

I think I need to kick the bad habit of following the magenta line while I'm still a fairly new private pilot. To be honest, the whole flight planning portion becomes very monotonous. I'm not really familiar with any flight planning software besides DUATS (which I just started using a week ago)...

    Dependency on GPS

Hi All, I wanted to bring up a topic that I'm sure has been discussed here before, but wanted to get some of your thoughts. As a new private pilot, and looking back on my training - I depended ALOT on the GPS. During a flight last night it finally hit me that, if this thing went out I would...

    Flying in Washington DC

Hmm...seems like it may be a good option. I have seen the club before, but got turned off by some of the dues, but maybe I just haven't thought through the long term benefit of it.

    Flying in Washington DC

I typically fly with my girlfriend, and I'm 170 and she's 130, so that shouldn't be an issue. We just do fun flights on the weekends for the most part. I'm not too worried about the space portion of it, especially since I hear the skycatcher is a little more roomy than a 152. I just want a...

    Flying in Washington DC

Hi All, I'm a fairly new private pilot, and I have been flying out of Manassas. Now that I have got my certificate, I'm trying (like most) to fly the cheapest plane I can find to build hours. Currently I change between a 172R ($145/hr) and a 172SP ($150/hr) and it's just getting too expensive...

    New Private Pilot

Also - I realize I didn't include some of the other maneuvers in the write up! I'll go back and up date it shortly.

    New Private Pilot

Hi All, I have been lurking around for a couple months, using all the great advice here and finally passed my private pilot check ride last week! Just a little background on me and my flying - I have moved quite a bit, and by time I got my certificate I had been through 3 flight schools, and 5...
