Interesting comment from an aircraft Broker.

The broker said to expect up to $2,400 per year in depreciation on a $40,000 purchase. I wonder how that compares to the decrease in residual value on a 60 month lease of a new $40,000 car. Tote up the sum of hangar rent plus insurance for those 5 to 6 years for another comparison. Airplane...

Give Up on Buying Plane, or Dive In?

Simple, if you are chasing a dream or myth, don't buy an airplane. If you think you will save money (i.e. spend less) then don't buy an airplane. If you are realistic about the costs and benefits and you are willing to pay those costs to have the benefits, buy. Since you have friends who own...

    I got laid off

Andrew, I am really sorry you have joined the ranks of the laid off. I know it is pretty raw right now and it will take some time for that to subside. I know it doesn't sound very helpful right now, but even in this difficult time, well-qualified and ambitious people will land on their feet...

Not your usual aviation and business question....

There are at least two businesses on that airport that assist builders with their homebuilt projects. One focuses on composites, the other on RV's. You could go talk to them about the realities of their businesses. Another business is a successful aircraft paint shop, you might talk to him about...

    Deregistered Aircraft

Solution 1: Mechanic interviews each of the three ex-wives. He auctions the lien to the highest bidder of the three. If that doesn't work, go to solution 2 Solution 2: He chooses the ex-wife he likes least, assigns the lien rights to her and tells her she owns the airplane. He explains that if...

    30th Anniversary

Thanks for all of the kind comments. I hope no one over indulged, but the party is over, time to get back to work. Speaking of work, how many would like to join me in updating the polish on that bird? Free polishing lessons and free beer (after polishing is done) are included. Must be present to...

    30th Anniversary

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the restoration of my Luscombe. I flew the post maintenance test flight on December 31, 1983. Each year on December 31, I try to do a commemorative flight, and today was spectacular here in Colorado. Feel free to go to the bar and get yourself a Miller High...

    Airtex PIREPs Please

Our Bonanza came with an Airtex interior when we bought it several years ago. It has held up well, both to normal use and the remove/reinstall cycles inherent with annual inspections. So, no original installation experience, but we're happy with the interior as installed. Scott

    "Stick and Rudder" Bad Typo

Hmm, my copy must be too new. Mine is of the third printing of the edition copyright 1944, renewed 1972. The biography note on the back fold of the dust jacket says he soloed in 1934. When I bought my hardcover copy, the price was $16.95. Has it gone up since then? It must be time to read it...

    PT6 question

I have no clue or experience on turbines. But I have a question: which engine is normally started first? Would the first, starting only on battery power be inclined to start slower than the second which would benefit from the higher voltage of the first engine's generator? And then . . . See, I...

ICAO codes grinding a good story to a halt.

I agree completely. But be careful, this can be like a dripping faucet in a quiet room. Once you start noticing all the white space that follows many abbreviations and acronyms you will become constantly irritated and grumpy. "Life is too short for abbreviations." (I don't remember who said...

    Stall warning

Yes. Most of my time is in airplanes without mechanical/electrical stall warning devices. I think a different question is "Have you ever been surprised by a mechanical/electrical stall warning device warning?" In other words, have you ever been saved by such a warning? We can assume that the...

    Landing a Pitts, TRICK ??

As an aside, Budd Davisson still makes a bit of his living teaching Pitts landing skills out of Scottsdale. I have long wanted take his training even though it's unlikely I will ever own a Pitts. See: http://www.airbum.com/ Looks like a good road trip! Scott

Yikes! Flight into IMC - What would you have done?

I always check the weather for any flight I am riding on or piloting, mostly because I enjoy the whole process. By doing that I am ready to suggest that we not go before we board the airplane if needed. I think a good skill to develop is the ability to inform someone "in-charge" that you are...

    How is everyone doing ?

Sorry to hear of those with tough times. October was particularly good for me as the weather here in Colorado was often spectacularly good. So good, that I just had to go to the airport and fly several times even when I hadn't intended to do so. Two examples: I got to fly the Champ from Meadow...

    Standard category to Experimental?

The Luscombe type certificate includes Continental A65, A75, C85 and C90 engines and provides the authority to install those engines. I believe, but don't know for certain, one needs an STC to install the O200.
