    Garmin 530W /Foreflight /Stratus 2

The 310 is a nice plane and sounds like a good match for your wants. Gotta admit that one would be my forever plane. Great fun on longer trips too. Keep us updated with whatever you decide.

All GTNs are WAAS, as are all current production units. The GNS was the transitional model which is why the W indicates WAAS equipped units. if the autopilot is a 400A or -B, there’s an outfit that can rebuild them. Autopilots Central in Oklahoma. They might be able to handle straight 400...

    Garmin 530W /Foreflight /Stratus 2

My thinking is a reluctance to rely on a transponder that may have come with the airplane itself from Wichita, and a preference to replace it at a time and place convenient for the OP. OTOH, getting a Stratus or other In-box and flying it as is for awhile is a serviceable option as well. That...

    Garmin 530W /Foreflight /Stratus 2

I'm gonna loop back to the original question. Since you mentioned in your original post that you're just getting back into GA and just want a GPS and ADS-B in, the simplest answer will be a GTX 375. Pair with a basic GI-106 or the Mid Continent equivalent (if needed), remove the ADF and old...

    Garmin 530W /Foreflight /Stratus 2

Mmm, project creep. Since we’re talking G5s, I’ll mention that it doesn’t always play well with vintage autopilots. If your 310 has an autopilot, interfacing with a G5 setup might or might not be simple. At worst you may need to reshuffle something in the old ADF indicator hole and not...

    Garmin 530W /Foreflight /Stratus 2

Wow, a Cessna ARC 400 transponder. That’s not something I’ve seen in ages. I’m impressed that it’s still working. Be ready to put in a 375 or similar if it suddenly dies on you. Have you priced out the first generation GTN 750s on the used market? Garmin introduced the next generation ones...

    Garmin 396

How old of a computer? Something running Windows XP or similar? You can run a virtual machine XP on Windows 10 but it isn't simple. Might be easier to find an older computer running what you need.

    Garmin 530W /Foreflight /Stratus 2

Bring it home, verify what's in the panel and fly it for a bit before you make any decisions. If the transponder you have already has ADS-B in you won't need the Stratus box. Stratus is for ADS-B In only and can't legally be hooked up to an in-panel GPS display, though it works great with your...

GTX 45R Squawk input via GTN

It's quite possible. They are remote boxes like this. Guess it isn't surprising that Garmin would sell less capable boxes to the experimental market.

GTX 45R Squawk input via GTN

And definitely the GTNs of both types controlling them.

GTX 45R Squawk input via GTN

They're on the AML, so it may be a different Garmin remote transponder than these. 45DR, i believe. Definitely diversity, definitely the 45 in and out.

GTX 45R Squawk input via GTN

Interesting. I wonder if that's a limitation on the experimental transponder, as we have both 650s and 750s controlling them without issue in our helis at work. Best bet is to contact Garmin directly and see who's right and who isn't.

GTX 45R Squawk input via GTN

Garmin says yes. Looking at the installation manual on page 65 will give you the diagram needed, and the configuration instructions are in there as well. And you can connect the 460 when you get it later, so both units could control it (unless I’m missing something in configurations).

    GNC 355 Installation Manual

Dunno if they still do for the 355, but they used to email it to you if you tell them where you bought it and your N number. Still worth a shot to reach out to them and see if they still do. their email contact is: g3xpert@garmin.com

    Budget panel upgrade

GNX 375, hands down. You’ve already got a conventional nav/comm for VOR use, having ADS-B in and out is a fantastic tool, and for the enjoyment you’ll get using it and the resale value when you sell will be highest with the 375. I wouldn’t install a KNS 80 at this time. The VOR network is...

    FS2020 missing towers?

Not surprised at all. Once you get out of the major metro areas, a lot of the structures are still somewhat generic or missing entirely. Missing grain elevators are the other type of prairie skyscrapers missing there.

    ForeFlight Subscription

Both CFIs and students, at least students who go to a college with aviation programs, get the discount. The other way to get a discount is to get iTunes gift cards at a discount on Black Friday. Last year I got two $100 cards for $70 each, something like that, and used those. Add those to...

    The Smoke & Fires

Finally got a couple days off from California. It's just a first class mess. Did see a bunch of fire trucks heading south on I-5 this morning about to cross over into Cali, so help's coming. I'll be back Tuesday fixing helis again.

    Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020

I've played around with the beta and had a chance today to try a friend's release copy. To me it still doesn't feel quite ready. The areas where it is complete are fantastic. The Midwest once you get away from Chicago is definitely unfinished. Overall I don't think it's any better than XP11...
