Think the FAA got it right this time

I watched about 3 minutes of one of his drone videos. It was painful. The guy is incredibly annoying. I did catch a couple takeaways. The guy is doing live streams and talking to the audience. He isn't just filming this recreational flying for himself, posting it on youtube, and making money as...

    That’s a Zeppelin, not a Blimp!

I see he has a very “Dale Earnhardt” approach to shoulder harnesses.

Great Lakes crash in San Diego, Ca

The lack of any ground scarring or damage to the fence makes it look like this one went pretty much straight in. Stall / spin likely. I was on shift sitting in the hangar office just across the runways on the South side of the airport and never even knew it happened.

Week 2 of Zodiac CH650 Build

The picture makes it look like a whole lot more than .010". What is supporting your OSB tabletop across that 4' span between 2x4s? When I built my table, I had the entire perimeter supported by 2x6s on edge, plus 2x4s every 16 inches inside the perimeter. I then shimmed it like crazy until there...

Week 2 of Zodiac CH650 Build

Maybe its just the picture, but that table looks awfully saggy in the middle. A FLAT table is an absolute necessity. It doesn't have to be level, but it has to be flat. I built my Sonex on a very heavy, but very flat table. I would routinely check the table with a long straightedge to make sure...

    California cabins?

I've flown to Kern Valley Airport L05 countless times in a 830hp single... helicopter. Does that count? But all joking aside, it's not that difficult. At 2600 ft it's really not that high. Temperature, and therefore DA can be high. Follow the Kern River. You only need to climb to maybe 5,000 ft...

    Hummel H5

The guy asks about a Hummel H5 and gets suggestions for a DA2. This isn’t a “what’s your favorite experimental airplane” thread. At least suggest similar aircraft. Single seat, VW powered, etc. There just aren’t many H5s out there so not very many people have experience with them. It sounds...

    Hummel H5

Pretty cool looking airplane, but there really weren’t that many built. The 1/2 VW tiny Hummelbird was pretty successful. It’s hard not to recommend a Onex if you want a VW powered single seat airplane. It out performs the H5 in pretty much every way, and has way more support and completed...

KMYF vs KSEE (Montgomery-Gibbs vs Gillespie)

There are quite a bit more options for MX at SEE. MYF has a much smaller footprint. Gibbs might have some GA MX shops over on that end of the field. I fly an experimental and hold the repairman's certificate for it, so I can't comment much beyond that.

KMYF vs KSEE (Montgomery-Gibbs vs Gillespie)

Bill, that house is worth over $1.1 million right now. Should have kept it. ;)

KMYF vs KSEE (Montgomery-Gibbs vs Gillespie)

Bill, yes I live in pacific Beach. On sail bay near Fanuel Park. I'll grab a picture of that house next time I am in North PB. In the meantime, looks like the Google street view shows what you describe, except blue.

KMYF vs KSEE (Montgomery-Gibbs vs Gillespie)

I had to make the same decision about a year ago. My Sonex is hangared at SEE and I fly out of MYF for work. What do you own? Hangar or tie down? You need to get on a hangar wait list now! It took me about 4 months and I got lucky. I think the average wait is 12 months+. I couldn't find...

    San Diego tips?

I would not consider VFR in to KSEE challenging at all. From the East, where he is coming from, it is straight in to a 5300' x 100' runway. No airspace, no reporting points, about as easy as it gets. $4.25 at KSEE vs $5.49 at KMYF. $1.24 per gallon can mean a lot, depends on how much you are...

    Highest speed

Airplane - Took my Sonex almost to VNE, 165KIAS. $30,000/165 = $182 per knot. Helicopter - In about a 70 degree dive, > 200KTAS, the helicopter did not use or easily display KIAS. Well beyond VNE. Very little symptoms of retreating blade stall. $35,000,000/200 = $175,000 per knot.

    San Diego tips?

I fly for work out of KMYF and I hangar my airplane at KSEE. It is seriously not an issue coming from the East. Whether your destination is KSEE or KMYF, you will not have to deal with any airspace. Just make sure you are below 4800 at the Class B line about 5 miles East of KSEE. Talk to...

    Falling out of a loop

It's not wind, it is just energy management. My guess is not pulling hard enough during the first 1/4 of the loop. Be smooth, but build the G rapidly. 4G is not a bad number to aim for, because you will probably not quite get there. That is the usual cause. Maybe a little too much pull at the...

    PHI filed bankruptcy

Haha, talk about a straw man argument. You keep changing the "straw man" that you are arguing with after I show that every one of your theories is wrong, while neglecting to acknowledge it. You just refuse to see the validity of my statements. You seem to think that just because a flight might...

    PHI filed bankruptcy

 indeed. I don't care if it's safer (although I don't have info saying it is). My sanity is worth any difference in safety. This presents a good point. What is safe anyhow? Certainly no helicopter operations will ever be safe in the true sense of the word. There is no safe or unsafe. There...

    PHI filed bankruptcy

If you have the information of hours/sorties flown in 135 HAA VFR SE vs SPIFR, or a path to finding that data, please let me know. I would love to have it. Otherwise, I am using the data available to us. Let's flip the argument here. You and weilke keep saying it is a marginal or negligible...

    PHI filed bankruptcy

First off, stop making this personal. It isn't a you vs me, us vs them. It is HAA SPIFR vs HAA SE VFR as a whole. Emotions are getting in the way of hard evidence and reason. I understand what you are saying about crashes per flight hour, but when you have zero SPIFR crashes due to VFR to IMC...
