Here's a post where I detailed my costs in obtaining my certificate.

TLDR: it was 49 hrs and $6,465ish total here in Colorado.
Well, here's the write up of my check ride. There are several other similar accounts on here as well, too. I'd definitely suggest watching the YouTube video with DPE Andy Munnis that I mentioned in my post below - that should give you insight into what the examiner will be looking for...
Here's a video for those fellow IR students who might be interested in a quick review and insight into what an examiner looks for during the Instrument CR. Andy Munnis, a local DPE here in Colorado who did a similar talk on the Private Pilot CR (youtube), recently did a talk on the instrument...
VATSIM and/or Pilot Edge are great services and a great way for a "no pressure" learning experience. I'm a huge believer in VATSIM particularly just because that's where my experience has been. Though, Pilot Edge provides a more complete experience that is not subject to who's online acting as...
I got my ppl in November and started IFR training earlier this month (partly because my CFI offered me free IFR ground instruction, but that's another story...). My major challenge is the aforementioned 50 hrs of PIC XC time requirement. But, barring that, I'd say start as soon as you feel...
Since being laid off three months ago, I've been wondering the same thing... But I keep hearing the voice in the back of my head chiming in with the ol response to the question "How do you make a little money in aviation? Start with a lot of money."
There does seem to be some ground to be...
The storm window on the Cherokee 180 I fly seems precariously attached while sitting on the ground, never thought about trying to open it in flight... Now you all are giving me ideas! :-o
Congrats and well done - that's exactly what my CFI said, too, about the 70%. "...if you were doing the high jump, you just need to clear the bar not jump over the moon." Always gave me a chuckle and took some of the pressure off.
Hey Steve, Welcome!
Having just passed my CR I was reflecting on my journey and what I did right and what I could have done better along the way. Do you have regular access to a computer there? The thing I found that helped me the most was getting acquainted with the radio and ATC (I used...
Ahhh, yes - you're correct. (that's what I get for late night spreadsheet entry!). That total was just for instruction and the plane. Take into account the solo time in the PA28 and it adds a grand to the total. But, overall it was still within what I was expecting to spend. Thanks for catching...
Thanks all! I'm still pinching myself today... "I'm a pilot!" I keep thinking. :)
You know, I meant to tabulate that and put it on my original post but neglected to do so. So, thanks for reminding me! Here's what I have:
10.5 hours logged back pre 2002. (These were pretty much useless...
First off, my apologies for the length. Settle in for a long read or skip to the TLDR part and pic at the end, I suppose. :)
Back in July, I recounted my first solo here on the PoA forums. http://www.pilotsofamerica.com/forum/showthread.php?t=61464 It was definitely a great feeling but...
