    Online resource for test bank

Sporty's Study Buddy and the exam4pilots was basically all I used to bang through test questions. I had a Gleim book and would read over it from time to time but it basically had the same questions that both of those other resources and I preferred those because I could take them in a test...

    Stratus 2/FF AHRS Question?

I just got my Stratus 2 and probably won't be able to fly with it for another week or so. I bought the suction cup mount as well but after reading a passage in the including manual, I'm not sure I'll get optimal performance when using the HUD/Synthetic vision. "...For the most accurate AHRD...

    Beyond the syllabus...

Good thread. I definitely agree that a lot of 'real world' type stuff isn't taught but I also realize that the lessons needed just to get through the training are jam packed and most folks don't know what they don't know so some of this stuff doesn't come up. I remember my first dozen...

    Insurance costs

we fly a cherokee 235 that's book valued at around $55k. Three of us are VFR guys with under 500 hours and one guy is a retired SWA captain with over 30k hours. I'm not sure how having him works into our insurance rate but we pay about $900/year.

    Reducing risk at night

...fly where there's lights/roads/towns. That's about all you can do. I love flying at night but don't plan on it or do it unless I absolutely have to. I love dusk flying - probably my favorite time to fly but you can still see stuff pretty well on the ground. Part of my XC I had to plan...

    Soon To Be Pilot

I did a quick search and found at least one school on the field, Flying Tigers. I didn't see a page with instructor credentials but it looks like they have a nice fleet and offer PPL training. Go down and ask to interview with a few CFI's. Don't just take whoever they give you (ie; who...

    Taxes for Plane LLC

yup. I'm not our 'accountant' but that's basically what we do. I know we haven't paid any taxes in the 2 years I've been in the plane.

    Private Pilot Training cost?

If you're like me and have to work for a living, have kids, etc... it will likely take 6-8 months to get it done...and that's flying at least once or twice a week. I came into my training very prepared as I had already flown about 25 hours and solo'd, etc... earlier in my flying career...

Tell me why you like the HSI

I'm not an IFR pilot, yet....but we have one and I've learned to really love it. I can use the autopilot and use it sync'd to the heading bug or the GPS track. I also like using the yellow arrow to align with the position of the runway when I've got visual but can't exactly see the runway...

    Private Pilot Training cost?

nope. Plan on spending $10k. If you get it for less, it's gravy.

    Another First Timer...

nope. Not so far anyway. I love mine...can't imagine using anything else.

    Another First Timer...

it wasn't as bad from the seat as it appears on the video...but the sun was brutal today.

    Another First Timer...

Short video of some ground ops/takeoff with a few more first timers. Took a long time buddy of mine and his son (and my son) over to 11R for lunch today. Love having the GoPro looking back to capture the looks on their faces when thep lane leaves the ground. Anyone else who travels...

Ah, I love these gas prices...

The bigger airports (esp the class C and B types) gas prices are ridiculous. I'm about 30 miles north of Austin and the gas up here is almost half the price. I know it's more expensive to operate off a bigger airport but come on. Perhaps it's a tactic to keep the riff raff away...the people...

[NA] Any semi local musicians up for lending me a condensor mic?

The Shure SM7B is the de-facto for metal/high SPL vocals. I know Dave Grohl used it almost exclusively on the last albums that the Foo Fighters recorded. I've got one, it sounds great on vocals and takes EQ really well. It's not cheap, but not incredibly expensive and not really great in the...

    PA-28 235 Cherokee

I don't know the dimensions and don't feel like looking them up now but the 235's wings are longer because of the tip tanks (which are simply a fiberglass add-on) compared to 180's. I flew my first few hours in 160's and the 235 cockpit doesn't feel much bigger, but I think it is...maybe an inch...

    Headset recommendations

Yes, obviously meant to say the Halo's. :) I'm the only pilot so no napping for me but clearly not having a giant headphone cup on is more conducive to laying your head on a pillow up against the window. :) For what it's worth, check out the 'downloads' section of Phil's site. There'a...

    Cross Country & Freezing Rain

well, crap...I didn't see that this was from a year ago. I thought you had already done your checkride...you were a little bit behind me (I got mine in late September)...as I remember responding to a few of your posts about the 235. Lesson learned. :)

have to +1000 on the Halo's. I love mine. I still use the foam tips but they don't bother me at all. It's easy to forget you even have anything on after about 10 minutes. Sound quality is great...not ANR of course, but to be honest I'm not a super fan of ANR. They cut out all the important...

Do you stress out when you don't see the traffic called out?

I get a smidge worried when the tower doesn't have radar. Fortunately, my home airport tower does so I don't worry about it too much when I'm in the Delta. I flew over to KTME (Houston Exec) over Christmas and I'm on a 3 mile base with all my lights on and the tower can't see me and there's...
