    Getting started... Best tip?

...i haven't read all the posts but scanned through most... Here's mine: Fly as often as possible...MAKE it work. Otherwise, you'll just be flushing $$. If you're schedule is tough then do 2 hour lessons. I started doing those exclusively after the first 5-6 flights. It just maximized...

    Renting sucks

It doesn't have to cost a fortune to own a plane. Find a group looking for a 3rd or 4th Partner. I'm in a 4-way on a Cherokee 235 and have almost 200 hours in the plane in the last 2.5 years...did all but the first 5 hours of my PPL in it. Over the last 2.5 years I figured it's probably...

Cool Flight - Lajitas International 89TE

It's an Embraer and belongs to the owner of the resort... Of all people to meet...we're sitting at the fire pit on our first night chatting, smoking cigars with a drink and a guy and 2 women sit down on the other side. Within a few minutes we are all talking and he mentions something about...

I guess? I dunno. Supposedly the Sheriff lives in the FBO/on the field so maybe they have some hookup to CBP or something...no idea.

Cool Flight - Lajitas International 89TE

I hear you. We left at 10:30am today...was still pretty cool outside but we were about 125lbs from gross so we used a bit more than I like using today as well. I could see really having to do some serious W&B there when it heats up. It's not that high there - 2700' but when it's in the high...

Cool Flight - Lajitas International 89TE

I think things have changed a bit (sounds like for the better) since you were there. They just completely repaved the runway a few months ago...it's flat and awesome (but I think a bit shorter than it used to be). Check out the last few minutes of the video. There were several guys out the...

Cool Flight - Lajitas International 89TE

...just got home from a long weekend in Lajitas, TX. It's down on the US/Mexico border just west of the Big Bend National Park area. http://www.lajitasgolfresort.com/ I took my wife, brother and sister-in-law for some R&R and KILLER golf. The Blackjack @ Lajitas Golf Course is pretty...

    Crosswinds in West Texas

I learned in central Texas (Austin area) from late December thru September and we get some crazy winds down here as well. I fly from an airport with two runways (18/36 and 11/29) so have most days with a relatively small x-wind component but my CFI was a big fan of calling the tower on slow...

    Densitity Altitude, its real

same here...don't see any logic in that at all. Heck, if your engine sputters out on you at the worst time while your still on the ground you're gonna be in trouble. No sense in not taking an extra minute or two to taxi to the end of the runway and use it all.

    Student Flying over Clouds Question

I did a lot of extra hood work...even called my CFI up a few times since earning my PPL to go fly in IMC to CYA in case that exact thing happened. It did happen once...flying at about 8500' above a broken layer near the coast that filled up very fast. I had to get through about 500' of it to...

One Extra Day in Austin, TX

...and unfortunately we aren't going to see much, if any VFR flying this week until at least wed afternoon. So, looks like a get together is moving along but there ain't gonna be no flyin'...

    ...Another Recording Option...

...quick video from the car this morning driving to the office. Thank god I don't have to deal with Austin traffic everyday...so bad now...please don't move here. :) PS-the video is only 1 minute long but i borked something in my video editor so it built out a 3 minute file. Nothing to see...

One Extra Day in Austin, TX

Land at KGTU, park for way less (not sure exactly but it's certainly not anywhere near $40) and probably about the same distance to downtown (maybe a bit more...and not fun if you are driving down I-35 in rush hour traffic...) as you are driving from out on the tollway. Super friendly folks...

One Extra Day in Austin, TX

There are several others just as good now...Franklin's is great but you have to get there early and wait, most times at least a couple hours depending on how early you got there to eat. So, it's a half-day experience...not sure with only one day extra you'd want to spend it that way.

Austin, TX to New Orleans...need a good midway stop...

Will do. We've got hotels booked (with the option to cancel within 24 hours, of course...) for the weekend of March 7th. So, we're a ways out...hopefully the weather hangs on for us. It's my bro-in-law's 40th b-day so we're taking the wives (who have never been to NOLA) there for a nice...

One Extra Day in Austin, TX

Holler at me. I'm based out of KGTU just north of Austin. I have my own plane...happy to fly you around...do the tour over the F1 track, Lake Travis, downtown, etc... if you want to get some flying in. The weather has been sketchy down here too...got super nice for a few days, then we got...

Austin, TX to New Orleans...need a good midway stop...

thanks folks - I'd love to the Galveston route and hug the coast but my lady backseat passengers aren't exactly super fans when it comes to flying and my goal is to just get us there as quickly as possible...with a short stop somewhere in the middle to stretch out, maybe grab a quick bite and...
