Congrats! I'm so close I can taste it. Enjoy!

    Boeing Studies Pilotless Next Jetliner

I was #2 for takeoff behind this guy earlier today (Reaper @ KSYR), they are here all the time now. I think full automation/remote piloting is a lot closer than we all think. I think we will see it slowly creep into commercial passenger aviation, but I agree first will be the cargo haulers. One...

Checkride - checklist use - what's too much?

OK, prepping for the checkride. Last couple of solo lessons I've been trying to practice in the manner of the checkride. Clearing turns, talk aloud like there is an examiner present, etc. Last couple dual lessons I asked instructor to basically be the examiner most of the time. One thing I...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Decided to go fly again today and burn some vacation time - instructor had another lesson with a student who owns his own plane, so I got to take the Cherokee alone, and put it away alone. When I came back one of the other hanger-mates was preflighting his C172, and offered to help me push it...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Finally good weather returns to the northeast! Was beginning to think we somehow moved to Seattle... Got 1.5h in last week - but was very windy (15G23k) by the time I got to the practice area, and really outside any solo flying I've done to this point. I spent the time doing turns around a...

    Starting at 56

Like you, I started late (well, I did some hours back in the 90's but nothing much). I was 47, and its been a great journey. I agree with Everything above - I also had a "medical minefield" I did not know about until a fortuitous google search brought me here, and to Dr. Bruce. I'm 99% confident...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

@Hippike Keep at it - the long XC was the most fun I've had yet (well, the night XC was also a blast). It's amazing how things that used to scare the pants off you start to become more normal as we progress. For me - spent another 2h today in beautiful weather practicing up for the check ride...

    Do you eat enroute?

I'm pretty new to all of this, but I always bring a granola/protein bar and a bottle of water. Keeping hydrated and blood sugar where it should be is part of being alert, IMHO. Although my longest flight so far is just about 3hrs, so what do I really know :-)

Studying for the check ride (PPL) - Suggested resources/techniques?

Congrats Pilot! Excellent work! I'm still studying regularly. I'm using the method of reading the ACS and then finding an answer/resources for each and every question/item. I'm sure I won't remember them all, but being very familiar with them and spending the time to look the stuff up has got to...

"Interiors" in biplanes? Ever seen anything other than "nothing"?

Wasn't really a complaint, more just an observation that I had never seen an interior in a biplane.

"Interiors" in biplanes? Ever seen anything other than "nothing"?

All really good points. I didn't even consider the whole "out in the rain" thing, although I would have a snap/fabric cover and hope to keep it weather tight even when on the road. Maybe some snap-on removable seat covers/cushions though, since I don't plan to ride with a chute unless I do...

"Interiors" in biplanes? Ever seen anything other than "nothing"?

My goal is to buy the biplane in my profile pic probably by next summer. Having ridden in it only once, I recall the interior - if one can call it that - is rather spartan. I.e. metal seat, interior of nothing but the inside of the tube fuselage and fabric, plywood floor. Now, nothing wrong at...

    Rotting Planes. Sad.

Ugh. Some of these pics make me sick. Especially that last batch with the Champ, 172 and what else... Guessing those were all in flying shape when hangered 10-15 years ago. Might even be usable still now (with a lot of work). God, comeon folks, get these birds out and for sale! And what I was...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Back in the air today, after what seemed like 10 days of low clouds, rain, wind and crap. Knocked the rust off, and practiced turns around a point, turns across a road, emergency descents, power out emergency landing, slip to land, and crosswind landings. (phew!). A couple hours well spent, I...

    PTS emergency descent...how?

Just practiced this today with CFI in a Cherokee 140/160. Technique he taught me is slow to Vfe, full flaps, nose down 45deg banking turn at Vfe and look for a landing spot. Aim for key point, Level out about 3-400 feet AGL slow to 85 and land it. From 3000' AGL (practice alt) this gives maybe a...

    Rotting Planes. Sad.

This is both sad, and ****es me off. There are so many students, young folk, not uber wealthy people that could benefit from these planes (before they are complete junk). This is where we need the rules to change - allow someone to get these flyable again without the insane certified A&P repair...

    Composite practice kit arrived!

NOT a plane, but... Spent every weekend last summer re-glassing the entire back/transom/stingers/floor of my boat. Buy LOTS of gloves, get some decent goggles with good ventilation, and prepare to hate fiberglass shards. Was not as hard as I had thought, but forethought/planning is definitely...

    Medical denial due to felony

If your last medical was 8/2006 you can almost certainly qualify for Basic Med. Look into this - even if you eventually go for your class I/II/III medical again when able. Until then, if you were not denied back in 2006, you should be able to continue on under Basic Med - IF you get to it right...

    Trouble climbing above 3,500

I was about to ask that same question... I wonder if he has an intake restriction and is running really rich (as a result). A/B mag check OK within spec? Running on one mag might also cause a power loss that was consistent across the power band, but I dont think that extreme.

    Question about medical process

I'll just chime in here to be sure to clarify some of the good advice already given. - If you intend to fly SP, and have no real desire for 4-place certified aircraft, night flight, instrument etc. Then simply stick with SP and your driver's license. - Once you apply for ANY medical, you have...
