2 killed in plane crash west of Daytona Beach

They inspected ten planes, one of which was an ERAU plane and that is the one that they found cracks on. The other nine came from other flight schools. 2 of them were from another unnamed Florida flight school. 5 of them were retired from a third Florida flight school. The last 2 were from a...

2 killed in plane crash west of Daytona Beach

The report didn’t say who owned the second plane that they found cracks on but it did list the serial number. Looking up the serial number shows that the plane is registered to Embry Riddle. It did state that the plane had a similar number of total airframe hours and cycles and that it was used...

How to do an unnecessary procedure turn?

If you were cleared for an approach that had a mandatory procedure turn and you decided to go straight in without making the turn you would be in violation of 91.123. §91.123 Compliance with ATC clearances and instructions. (a) When an ATC clearance has been obtained, no pilot in command may...

RC Airplanes At Our Airport - Thoughts

A drone is classified the same as any other model aircraft. The difference is whether it is being operated as a hobby or for commercial purposes. If you are a hobbyist you must follow the rules of part 101 in the FARs, if you are a commercial operator then you have to follow the rules of part...

3rd Class medical expiring, can I wait 2 more years for doctor?

Q9: Do I have to always “hold or have held a medical certificate” in the past 10 years? A: No. There is no 10-year requirement, or a 10-year “look-back”. You only need to have held a medical certificate at any point after July 14, 2006. If you meet that provision, then you never have to hold a...

3rd Class medical expiring, can I wait 2 more years for doctor?

You still need to see a doctor. There is a checklist that has to be signed by a doctor and your expired 3rd class doesn’t take the place of that. The following is from the FAA’s basicmed FAQs: Q42: I just received a 3rd class medical certificate. Can I use my medical certificate to meet the...

New Commercial ACS... complex plane not required?

Yes, they can use a multi for the complex requirements, even if they don’t take the multi checkride first.

New Commercial ACS... complex plane not required?

I would expect a commercial pilot to be able to explain those systems but the objective in the ACS is “To determine that the applicant exhibits satisfactory knowledge, risk management, and skills associated with the safe operation of systems on the airplane provided for the flight test.” I...

New Commercial ACS... complex plane not required?

No, basically any single engine plane that you can use for a private checkride can be used for a commercial or CFI checkride. They had proposed a change to require a TAA or complex aircraft for the checkrides but it looks like they decided that wasn’t necessary.

New Commercial ACS... complex plane not required?

Yes, it is very clear in the CFI PTS. Change 6 (April 19, 2018) • Removed the complex airplane requirement from practical tests for an airplane single-engine instructor rating and made corresponding changes to Task elements and the following sections in the Introduction: o...

New Commercial ACS... complex plane not required?

They also changed the page in the appendix (A-19) for required equipment. It used to state that the aircraft must be complex or turbine powered. The new change just states that a complex plane must be used for a AMEL or AMES practical test.

New Commercial ACS... complex plane not required?

The FAA posted change three to the Commercial Pilot ACS on their website. They removed all references to retracting landing gear after take-off. Does that mean that applicants no longer require a complex plane since a fixed gear plane is capable of meeting all of the listed requirements...

    Combining Checkrides

Yes, if you are doing a combined checkride you either pass the whole thing or fail the whole thing. The following is from page 2 of the private pilot ACS where it talks about taking a combined private pilot/instrument checkride. A combined checkride should be treated as one practical test...

    Combining Checkrides

I think the only checkrides you can combine are private and instrument and only if you have completed an approved part 141 appendix M course.
