Garmin 430W losing the WAAS on the LPV

I know a few guys who are responsible for that. They get to go jam the hell out of GPS 2 weeks a year when doing their guard duty.

Garmin 430W losing the WAAS on the LPV

I've never lost integrity on any of the LPV approaches I've flown in Colorado. (I've flown quite a few because I find them so darn enjoyable) It sounds like either there is an environmental issue or a jamming source near that field (no bueno).

    DEN Summer WX finally arrived

Hangars are almost unobtainable at KAPA at any price. Its a tradeoff between covenience (I could have hangared at FTG), cost and risk. I knew the risk when I parked it and I paid the insurance to cover it.:dunno:

    DEN Summer WX finally arrived

No idea. The storm was in the middle of the night. We live about 4 miles straight north of the field and we only got pea sized hail. The adjuster was telling us that the Cherokee 6 has pretty thick skin and it still looked like the surface of an orange. He said they had a Skycatcher where the...

    DEN Summer WX finally arrived

Met the insurance adjuster yesterday on the ramp. It looks like my plane is probably totaled and definitely not airworthy.

    DEN Summer WX finally arrived

I just got a call from one of my partners... The Six has significant hail damage to the stabilator, 2 broken windows on the pilot's side, and dimples on the wings. We're tied down on the TACair ramp. I'll be contacting the insurance co today. I'll post pics when I get out to the...

    $9 Solutions to $2 Problems

We just bought $15 worth of chicken wire to protect $0.50 worth of strawberries from the squirrels. At the hardware store, I looked straight at my wife and questioned the logic of this, but she and the kids were adamant that we must protect the 4 strawberries on that plant.

    Gadgets

Hey, I bought on of those at the Harbor Freight store. It was on the checkout counter just right for an impulse buy. It is plenty bright. I threw it right into the flight bag.

How Windy is Too Windy for You?

I'll accept up to 30 kts straight down the runway as long as the gusts are less than 40kts. We left KPUB a year or so ago with sustained winds over 30kts straight down the runway. It provided an excellent tailwind for the first leg of our trip. I've landed with 20 kt 90 degree x-wind, but I...

Life Insurance for Pilots that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

I just got an offer from Travers Aviation for term life, $500,00 at ~$20/mo for a person under 40. I think it said ~$30 for 40 to 50 years old. I actually use the life insurance offered through work. I verified that there are no exclusions for aviation. It costs me about $30/mo for 5x...

    What Kind of Flying

Camping. Woohoo!!! Load up 3 kids, a wife, 2 dogs and 150lbs of camping gear and head into the hills. Around here most airports will allow you to camp on the field.

    Angle of Attack Gauge/Meter

As everyone noted, AoA indicators could be installed in GA aircraft w/o much problem. I don't think the primary cause of stall/spin accidents in the pattern is lack of instrumentation. The ASI works perfectly to keep a pilot from stalling in the pattern. Inattention in the pattern is what...

How hard to pull - a scenario

Yes, I can...but not with the data you provided. Give me the coefficient of lift and coefficient of drag and I can calculate the optimal flight profile to get the max altitude gain in the shortest distance. Edit: Hmm, after thinking a bit more the right answer may be pull infinite g's for an...

Word, I think you could do the whole flight at 6500'. It would just be a very long flight.

    GPS outage or system problem?

The US Air Force is compelled by Executive Order to ensure that the GPS signal is available for all peaceful uses. Therefore they will never scramble to signal coming from the satellites. They do plenty of testing on the ground in localized areas.

    lowest altitude route

Good call. I'm sure finding an experienced POA pilot to go with you won't be that hard. I have never seen a site or tool that will find a winding path through the mountains. It might be kinda fun to write it. It would involve some nifty vector field calculus. I'll see if I can find a...
