One thing that should have been taught to you in basic training, but was not.

I count myself fairly fortunate that my PPL training covered most of the stuff that is listed in this thread. One thing I would have liked to have covered is how to properly tie down the plane with chains. (Depending on the size of the links/hooks and the tie-downs on the plane it can be a...

    Passenger Brief

I go over the basics, seat belts, my emergency plan if we have problems on roll out/climb out and their responsibility which is just to open the door before "landing off field" (I don't like to use crash), don't talk when we are near the airport (I'll let them know when I need them to be quite)...

    landing tips? please

Soft Field = set it down as gently as possible. Whether that means you carry a little power and "fly it on" or if you cut power and flare it out just above the runway. You will figure out what works best for both you and whatever type of plane you are flying. Short Field = Pick your landing...

    Scenic Flight around PHX

Sounds like a great route. KCHD is where I fly into when visiting family in Glibert/Mesa. I was planing on taking some of them up along the Salt River Lakes, over Lake Roosevelt and then landing in Payson for some breakfast or lunch depending on the timing. I think I'll file your route away for...

    Close call this weekend

I have had a number of quick "non-standard radio calls" with other planes at un-towered fields. About a month ago I was doing pattern work at night at Corona and there was another plane doing the same thing. He had been following me in the pattern for 2-3 landings when I got a "Hey Mooney, where...

It looks like I'm not flying.....

I ended up with about an inch of water in my hangar just because there was so much rain in such a short time it couldn't all run off quick enough but no harm done. I don't keep stuff on the floor. Level is back down to the levels before the storm so everything's good. Yes, December 2010. I...

It looks like I'm not flying.....

Yep, and I spent last Sunday/Monday watching the water levels behind the Prado Dam. It peaked at 512.44', the end of the runway at Corona (and my hangar) are at 515'. At least the forecast has the high wind warning ending at 1pm tomorrow, hoping to go flying tomorrow afternoon.

what do ya'll think about this?

Couldn't agree more. I trained in Cherokee's and my first long xc after getting my PPL was renting one of them and flying Chino, CA to Chandler, AZ. 115mph IAS with about a 95mph ground speed was slightly faster than driving. (It was more fun and scenic than driving.) After that I decided to...

    PPL Checkride Experience?

Like Gary above I have kept a blog of all my flying. Here is the post on my checkride. http://intothesky.us/2016/10/15/check-ride/ Some of the best advice has already been given above, the one that I caught myself on a few times was giving too much of an answer. Go through the ACS and make...

    Getting Ready to Solo

I trained at a towered airport and for my first solo I was told to tell the tower when I called in that it was my first solo. I'm thinking that was so that she could give me a little more attention and spacing if it looked like I needed it. After my three trips around the pattern and three...

Time to Step Up to a Faster Plane?

Introduce yourself over there. There are some there that post here too, but there are quite a few that mainly just stay on the MS forums. Think of it like expanding your circle of friends. You will have support here and over there. Plus if you are really thinking about the Mooney they are a...

Time to Step Up to a Faster Plane?

Condolences... :( Get the Mooney. I am just a low time PPL and got my Mooney with just under 60 total hours. It is a M20D that was converted to retract and CS prop, basically a C. It is so fun to fly! While you're at it if you haven't yet, head over to the Mooneyspace forums. A great bunch of...

Cherokee down near Cable airport, California

The folks in the tower at ONT are great and super helpful. We used the airport there for some landings a couple times while I was doing my PPL training and even went there during my checkride. Once they let us do a touch n go on 26R followed by a simulated engine failure and turning around to...

    best flight planning sheet?

This is one of the ones I found online. I added in an extra column for frequency changes along the route. I liked having the frequencies there handy before I needed them when I was on flight following. If you fill everything in and then fold along the bold lines it will fit a kneeboard. You do...
