    IFR Finally: At 63

I started flight training after I retired and was 66 when I got my Private Pilot certificate. I started training for an Instrument Rating at age 70. The book learning was fascinating for me and I passed the written test easily. But the flying part has been really tough. I’ll be 72 next month and...

Wow. This site is really good. It has every restaurant I know about in the SoCal area.

ATC Communication Training - Ground School

I just bought this new book/video combo, and it looks good: https://www.pilotworkshop.com/master-vfr-communication Like others above, I too recommend www.liveatc.net . It's become my favorite "radio station."

    X-Plane 11

Thanks for this. I'm going to give Ortho4XP a try. It looks worth the effort.

    X-Plane 11

Could you tell us more about the terrain that you downloaded? I looked for "Open Maps" but didn't find anything with that exact name, and what I did find didn't appear to be terrain for flight sims. Thanks.

    Numbered Visual Waypoints

Foreflight has several “VFR Waypoints” with names that begin with VP and end with three numbers, like “VP590” for Malibu Beach. Are “VP###” names assigned by the FAA, or do they come from somewhere else? (Jeppesen charts, maybe?) They do not appear on FAA charts. I’ve seen them only in Foreflight.

    Top Gun goosebumps

Yes, I got a chill. I tried to get the DVD from Netflix, and was told that there's a "long wait" for it. Guess many others, like me, want to see it before Part 2 shows up in theaters.

    Top Gun goosebumps

Any idea how the animation was created? Do you suppose it was done by hand, or is there some nifty software that did it automatically?

    Solo Shirt Pic Thread

My shirt says "Transforms from Legal Eagle . . . " because I was a law professor, and my flight instructor was a student in an Aviation Law course that I taught. We did a dramatic and successful role reversal: the student became the teacher and taught me so well that I soloed and then got my...

    Anyone Flying with New iPad?

I use an iPad Pro 9.7 in an xNaut "mounted" with a leg strap. The xNaut prevents the iPad from overheating, even in a low-wing plane on sunny and warm days -- a problem I had a few times before I got the xNaut.

IFR ACS Study - Going Nuts

I don't agree that Bob is overthinking it. I think it's a good idea. I tried to do it myself, because the FAA's references are to hundreds of pages per item, and that makes the references useless. Unfortunately, I found the job to be a lifetime's worth of work -- and if that's an exaggeration...

This is an excellent thread! I was amazed at how many of these things I actually do.

    Computer based IFR course?

There's nothing at all wrong with the King course. I used it, and it made getting through all the topics quite easy for me. I also had exam prep software and a book -- the kind that provide sample questions and explanations -- and it seemed to me that there were some questions that weren't...

    Ipad overheating during flight?

I bought an X-Naut and it works perfectly, even when my iPad is in direct sunlight.

    They ruined my certificate :(

Excellent write-up about your checkride. I'm in training now, and will be saving what you wrote to reread when I get closer to my checkride.

Question about VOR approach Catalina KAVX

OK. Good. I see it now. Thanks Palmpilot and Makg1. (I also now see that V27 is a route from the northwest as well as from the southeast.)

Question about VOR approach Catalina KAVX

I too don't understand why it's necessary to fly the procedure turn when arriving from the north. Arriving on V27 is different. That arrival is from the southeast, so it is necessary to get turned around in order to land on runway 22. From the north though, it's a clean straight in arrival.

Van Nuys - California - PPL Training

I too recommend Bruce Breslau, highly. I did my Private Pilot training with him, and am now doing my Instrument training with him. He instructs out of Van Nuys. I'm training in a Garmin G1000-equipped Cessna 172 that I rent from Mach 1 Aviation. But Bruce has access to round-dial aircraft if...

    Airplane ownership - real numbers

If people kept a spreadsheet on the cost of raising a child, they'd be just as shocked as those who track their plane ownership expenses. Just being alive costs money. Spreadsheets simply focus attention on what those costs are, and that's something most people don't do with the expenses of...
