    Reference needed Jackson Hole, WY

Good luck with your lesson. I’ve heard lots of good things about flying out of Driggs airport. Jackson is nice. Beautiful scenery, interesting town, incredible food. But the airport is incredibly busy for one of that size. Not the best place for lessons.

    Anti-venom flight during 9/11 shutdown

It was really unfortunate that GA was shut down as long as it was. GA and flight training are industries that the US absolutely dominates over our peers. Politics. Some businesses really took a hit. Like in the market crash in 2007 when the auto execs got roasted on Capitol Hill for having...

How long did it take to get your PPL?

I’m often asked by students, how long should it take to get their PPL? I tell them that their CFI doesn’t really have an hour target - instead it’s a capability target. When they’re ready to operate an aircraft as a Private Pilot, they’ll be endorsed. Everyone is different, and the biggest...

How long did it take to get your PPL?

We had an unfortunate incident at our airport where a CFI stalled, nearly spun, and crashed a 172 on a runway. Fortunately, he and student both walked away from it. Be careful.

    Utility Category Certification

Right you are... I was just trying to point out that some airplanes carry the Utility category throughout their loading envelope. But thanks for clarifying that.

I landed safely (Doug Barr aka coloradobluesky)

Thanks for sharing - we all need a reminder from time to time. Glad you landed safely. Many above have said it and I believe it’s true: attitude, healthy living and treatment can set this disease back or even beat it. May you be the next to beat this condition. Thoughts and prayers, brother.

    Utility Category Certification

The utility category, in the PA-28, can simply be though of as a more restrictive loading envelope, than what’s allowed in normal category operation. Look at your airplane’s CG range and weight graph. The envelope defined by the dashed line provides the utility loading limits. If you can load...

I think I got some carb ice yesterday...

Nice work, tawood. You might consider revising your checklist based on this experience. Not sure how applicable to your Cherokee, but some aircraft actually run a little smoother in some conditions, with a little carb heat, once you’ve adjusted the mixture. The O-470 182’s tend to have fairly...

    Missing Log Books

and all the AD's are current... How do they know this? Seems like there would’ve been some AD inspections during those 27 years...

    Onboard O2 systems

Yes, but if you’re flying in mountainous areas, O2 can provide options, like improved routing, or even just aid in the hunt for smooth air.

New Commercial ACS... complex plane not required?

Right... So the government saved you 1.5 hours in a supposedly difficult to find complex aircraft for the checkride. But left you still having to spend at least 10 hours in that complex airplane for training. To the government, that makes perfect sense.

Cessna 182P Takeoff Distance 0 degrees Flaps

I like the suggestions for finding a long runway and determining your own numbers. Know your own aircraft. In Eckalbar’s books about flying high performance singles and twins, and the one about the Bonanza, he describes how to determine several performance numbers, Vy, best glide in different...

Meigs Field bulldozed by Mayor Daley 15 years ago

Nice pic. Early versions of Flight Simulator used to open up on that field. I “flew” there a lot.

5 related adults dead in Cessna 340 crash

I agree with the idea that your typical steam gauge DG/HI can actually be used to keep a pilot on the runway - if they’ve practiced and maintained skill. But I’ll readily admit a huge sense of relief once airborne whenever I’ve practiced this.

Extra Readings for Commercial Student Pilots

NTSB reports as case studies? The NTSB web page let’s you search on many different parameters, for example, aircraft, location, severity, etc. I was once trying to find the report for an accident I’d heard of, but really knew nothing about except that there had been fatalities. So I searched on...

Ever get permission to fly through R-5107B?

Was cleared through the Army’s Yakima firing range restricted airspace once when it wasn’t active. They do all kinds of things there, artillery and tank warfare training, flying helicopters at night with all the lights off, etc. Looking down as I passed through, my goodness what a desolate...

Narrowest runway you'd be willing to land on?

When I was learning to fly my instructor had me land on 45 foot wide runway during a night cross-country. Did okay, but quite a difference from the 150’ home field. The strangest thing about it was right after the first landing. We were both looking outside. In the glow of the nav lights off...
