    What a rip off

Tom, not anyone should or shouldn't. Just pointing out there are avenues available. The AC says identical part number by manufacturer is acceptable. Timken bearings on a Cub are available at the local bearing house. Same part number imprinted as the original. Works just the same because...

    Flying seems so far away.

I've been married for 29 years as of Sunday. Fortunately, I was already a pilot when we met. I took her flying on an early date, though she was not (and still is not) a fan of flying. I told her early on when she wanted me to change plans from flying to going shopping with her, "Do not ever...

    Boring Holes in the Sky

I'm not a fan of the runs anytime, but even less so while I'm flying. The runs makes even a short flight unpleasant...

[Ohio] State tax dept wants purchase price info so they can tax me...

I don't dispute some work is done, KFYE was resurfaced last year and it only took about three months. As was Bolivar during same time and off and on closed for about the same amount of time. As I understand it, the lionshare of funding comes from federal monies with the TAA simply managing...

    VOR Minimum Operational Network (MON)

I tune in my VOR occasionally just to see if it works and if the GPS and it jibe...so far, they do.

    Preferred throttle/mixture/prop control

Quadrant. With "push/pull" types, prefer a vernier over the friction lock type though some types will tell you a vernier on a throttle is a no-no. Never had any issue with mine.

11 years Epileptic Free - FAA Medical Exam

I guess I worded that poorly. We both knew I was going to end up with a SI, but thought we had covered all the bases. Even with request for additional information, it was 67 days from initial exam to issue. Ironically, what the FAA asked for more info on wasn't anything related to what caused...

11 years Epileptic Free - FAA Medical Exam

I had a local AME refuse to make an appointment without providing the MedEx confirmation number. I found a different AME...quickly. Ending up using a local AME who does nothing but Aeromedical Certifications. Most the FedEx guys based here use him. Thorough and detailed. Even after...

[Ohio] State tax dept wants purchase price info so they can tax me...

So, the 4.5% fuel tax is above and beyond the sales/use tax. I've seen very little TN involvement in western TN airports. Tennessee doesn't foot the bill, they simply distribute Federal money through the TN aviation commission. Saying TN spends the money is like saying everyone who pays taxes...

[Ohio] State tax dept wants purchase price info so they can tax me...

I've purchased planes in two transactions. Engine and prop in one and airframe in the other... I've also purchased in "not airworthy" status but in such condition it was quickly made airworthy again by installing my prop. IIRC, that had an impact in Oklahoma.

[Ohio] State tax dept wants purchase price info so they can tax me...

Tennessee sent me such a letter when I bought my Starduster Too in 2004. I told them I had nothing which showed the actual transaction other than a bill of sale with $1 OVC. They said I could declare a value or, failing that, they would assess a value and tax me on it. I rolled the dice on it...

Looking for a way to finance your plane?

This morning I tried telling my wife God was wanting me to buy a third airplane. She reminded me I had told her several times, three was too many to maintain and still get to fly much and that is why I sold my Swift. Nothing like using my own words against me.

    Weird pilot habits.

I'm confused, is it the habits of weird pilots or weird habits of normal pilots? Is there such a thing as normal pilots? Are normal pilots more strange than weird? Every question only yields more questions.

Twin Mustang XP-82 Coming Together Nicely

In addition to being Walter's son, he is also retired USAF pilot and recently retired FedEx Captain. He has shared many stories over the years and shown me many private photos and various pieces he has kept, mostly minor. But most of all, he is simply a great guy and great friend.

Twin Mustang XP-82 Coming Together Nicely

Talked to my good friend Wally Soplata today. He is only son of Walter Soplata who saved the XP-82 and many other planes. The badly needed wheel brake assembly was found, by his nephew, packed in a trailer filled with old newspapers and magazine. It was the only airplane part amongst hundreds...
