4 hour pilot with stupid questions

KLVN is a smaller airport, but it might not completely fall into the "sleepy little rural Minnesota airport" category as its owned by the Metropolitan Airport Commission (which also owns KMSP). A big operation like that is likely to impose a significant administrative overlay. My home airport is...

    Do you grade your flights?

“Pass” or “Fail”. Landing with no injuries or damage is a “pass”.

    $20 hour Cessna 172?

What a great hobby that must be.

    Glider into IMC near mishap

Not exactly...balance can function well with the eyes closed when standing as long as joint position-sensing is intact. Balance while standing requires joint proprioception, vestibular apparatus, and vision...any two of the three. Proprioception while sitting in the cockpit of an airplane is...

Understanding Windshear Recovery on Approach and Take-off

The METAR and TAF usually has a note about wind shear and its altitude, I've noted, and it does come up in Foreflight. I generally also look at the winds aloft compared to pattern altitude. There's no wind shear warning on ASOS.

    Glider into IMC near mishap

Spin vs "graveyard spiral". I'm guessing the latter.

    Glider into IMC near mishap

The student is probably a certified pilot seeking a glider rating. Certainly bad decision-making, whoever made the decision, to head to the left over the ridge. Should have turned right and stayed upwind.

    Glider into IMC near mishap

Juan Brown has a good point-by-point review of this flight.

Buying Used A20- what to look for?

The ear pads tend to break down over time, easy to replace for $25-$50. Chinese knockoffs are available too. You would likely want replace the microphone foam too. Otherwise, you'd have to test them. One way to at least partially test them is to pair them to your phone and make a phone call. Not...

    Planeport type hangers

I live midway between two airports...10 miles from my house either direction....one with two nice 7000x150 ft concrete runways (could probably use a control tower but is currently uncontrolled) and the other a nice little country airport with 4000x75 foot bumpy asphalt and the another runway...

    Which iPad do you use?

That and the cellular capability is well worth the $130. For $10 month on my AT&T account, the iPad is added to my data plan. The iPad will natively access the internet for data anyplace there's a cell signal and no wifi. Such as...4500 feet altitude.

    Planeport type hangers

The ability to store tools, lights and power, and keep other stuff like boats and snowmobiles makes my closed, locked T-hangar worth the $160/month I pay for it. An open T-hangar would be a distant second choice, and only if there was no enclosed hangar available. (This is Minnesota. Hangars...

    Which iPad do you use?

If you’re looking for a deal, best place is to shop Apple refurbished. https://www.apple.com/shop/refurbished Stay away from the other sites that sell refurbished IMHO, like Amazon. An Apple refurb is completely refurbished and OEM re-packaged instead of sent to you in a plastic bag like...

    Which iPad do you use?

No, it’s exactly $130. Reviewing the Apple Store iPad site and their pricing will clarify these things for you. https://www.apple.com/ipad/ . Pricing at other sites that sell Apple stuff might save you a few $$.

    Which iPad do you use?

Each iPad model can be bought with or without cellular/GPS. Whichever model you want, if you pay $130 extra, you can have GPS (except for the Pro, which is $150 extra)

    Eye floaters?

Personally, I'd ignore it (and did when I was 17), but if you want to be on the safe side, go see either an optometrist or ophthalmologist. In this case, I'm confident that it really doesn't matter who you see since any possible retinal issues in someone your age will be readily diagnoseable...

    Which iPad do you use?

My iPad and phone just connect via bluetooth to my A20 headset. I get reporting from iPad and also can talk on the phone I've not had trouble with overheating, but I've read where some people have. On the Cessna it mounted on the lower left corner of the windshield, on the RV9 it mounts on a...

I am a rude hangar neighbor

I'm certainly not a naturally gregarious guy, but I've come to appreciate the local hangar community. I've benefited from hangar neighbors, everything from advice, to physical help, to tool and equipment loans, to shoveling snow in front of my hangar door. The FBO is happy to pull my plane out...

    Which iPad do you use?

I wrestled with the iPad Mini vs the 11-inch iPad Pro. If I had been committed to a knee-mounted or yoke-mounted iPad, it would have been the Mini. As it was, I continued to prefer my simple old aluminum kneeboard and pencil on my knee for notes and note-taking. In the Cessna, I Ram-mounted the...

    Which iPad do you use?

iPad Pro 11-inch 256 gig cellular/GPS on a single-suction-cup mount running foreflight. Works great. I have an anti-glare screen protector. I got it when I was flying old Cessnas...my current airplane is entirely glass, rendering Foreflight less useful in the cockpit, but still very useful...
