Flying through MOA and restricted areas

If I understand it correctly, the whole concept of a MOA is that it is a Memorandum of Agreement between the military and the civil aviation world to share some airspace that the military actually 'controls', as opposed to the FAA. There are published 'hot' and 'cold' times, but those can...

Flying through MOA and restricted areas

Read post just above yours. There's a lot of confusion about both kinds of airspace, and I think we'll all learn from that.

    tell me about your elt

It's orange, kinda heavy. Weighs the tail down a bit. I see it every couple of years when it gets replaced, and I've never heard it. Is that helpful?

Flying through MOA and restricted areas

If you're already on with FF, you can simply say 'xxx Center, is MOA xxx hot?" they'll advise. Quick and easy, and everyone is on the same page. And, it's on the tape.

Flying through MOA and restricted areas

azblackbird is also asking about "being vectored" on VFR FF. Anyone want to address that? No thanks :) Why do I think I'm about to step into a steaming pile of something, but step I will go. A little background. I was flying my first plane home from CA to TX a few years ago, and had the...

Flying through MOA and restricted areas

MOA's can be active (hot), or inactive (cold). ATC will know their status. In my VFR experience, if the MOA is cold, they won't say a word and you fly on. If it's hot, they'll either let you in (you're not an issue) or tell you to stay out. That being said, I don't see anything wrong with...

Expiration Date on AeroShell Sport Plus 4 Oil

Unless the oil has been stored in Death Valley for the last decade, or left open to the elements, I doubt that it has gone bad in any way. The base product is a few hundred million years old. The expiration date is mostly an arbitrary number. The bigger question would be is that oil...

    BSA Aviation Merit Badge Counseling

Having done a lot of Angel Flights, the kids are more interested in sightseeing, and maybe taking the controls just to say 'they' flew the plane (I always offer, and so far, nobody has turned me down). Also, keep most of the walk-and-talk to just what they need to understand for the merit...

    Aircraft Requirements for Private Checkride

Well, I took my PPL checkride 8 years ago, and got a pink slip on VOR navigation. (cleared up fairly fast after that), so, I'd say, if it's in your airplane you probably need to know how to fly it.

    Dauphin Island Airport 4R9 Closed?

Not completely related to this thread, but it brought up a memory... A few years ago I was flying in East Texas and caught a conversation between a student on a solo xc, and his instructor, who he'd heard on the freq in another airplane. Student was planning on landing at xxx airport, which I...

    Rituals

Once everything is secured, and its time to leave the airport, I always pat the nose of the airplane, and thank it for a great flight and keeping me safe.

Engine TBO (years, not hours) question

As I understand it, the 12 years, 2000 hrs numbers that everyone puts out are not really addressed in Part 91 regulations, nor are they more than manufacturers recommendations, not mandates. My take is more on how the plane has been maintained in that time. Has it flown regularly? And, as...

    Tips to CFI's?

Ouch. Hit a nerve. In the US, the only profession (that I know of) that gets so badly paid and relies on tips of customers is wait staff at restaurants. I dunno how this got started, or why it has persisted, but it has. And, somehow, it's bred this whole idea of somehow we need to pass...

Anyone been to a military funeral lately?

When my dad passed 2 years ago (WWII vet), we had his funeral in a small Colorado town, pretty rural area of the state. I wasn't sure we could do much of anything of a decent military funeral. The VFW was very helpful in getting me in touch with setting up a nice color guard, very respectful...

    Cancelled: Dallas Area Fly/Drive out - March 25th - T67

So many fly-in's, all on the same day. Spring is in the air! I'll most likely be at a Grumman one in Conroe. Not going to touch the potential marital strife of 6PC. Nope, not going there.

    Bird strike yesterday

I nailed a turkey vulture from a group munching on some road kill with a mini-van many years ago. He broke out the headlight, and dented the front quarter panel. Found out I was on a dead-end road (pun maybe intended) and had to turn around and pass by the scene of the crime again. I had taken...

Do enroute controllers care about birds?

Even if there isn't a tower, or controller, it's a good idea to announce a possible runway or airway hazard. I had a flock of buzzards sitting on a runway one day. I did an overfly, and they scattered a bit, but came back by the time I was back around in the pattern, behind a student pilot who...
