SB569A - exact start of 12 year deadline?

Did anything come of that Robert Mills class suit? I recall writing to him but never heard anything. What I do know for sure is that Lyco, if credibly threatened with legal action (meaning, engaging real lawyers and taking it some way) did individual deals with pilots. These were always...

SB569A - exact start of 12 year deadline?

I thought the reason for the 12 year time limit was that since the official engine life is 12 years, and since Lyco would install a new crank free of charge if you used them to OH your engine at the 12 year point, this policy protected them from a class action, since you would get the crank...

SB569A - exact start of 12 year deadline?

Thankfully I did mine in 2008. I see two things happening: One is that certain aviation personalities are telling people that the 12 years starts with the issue of the aircraft CofA. This is clearly wrong. The resulting error depends on how long the manufacturer took between screwing the...

SB569A - exact start of 12 year deadline?

I phoned up Lyco and the man said that the 12 years starts from the date of the engine installation in the airframe, which should also be the first date in the engine logbook.

SB569A - exact start of 12 year deadline?

This says The AD requires that the crankshaft be replaced at the earliest of the following: the time of the next engine overhaul as specified by Lycoming, the next separation of the crankcase, or no later than 12 years from the time the crankshaft first entered service or was last...

    Please help identify this nutplate

Now I have to get the two little screws. They are #2 x 56 UNC (I have a thread gauge) but the length is 0.178 which is slightly under 3/16". I will have to get 1/4" and cut them down if necessary, or use washers.

    Please help identify this nutplate

The bolt thread OD is about 0.19". From here, 10-24 and 10-32 are in the right area, and presumably 10-32 is the only option on that nutplate. Thank you all for your help. Now I just have to find somebody here in the UK who sells them :)

    Please help identify this nutplate

The rivet spacing is 0.486 - looks like Chart D on that PDF. But what thread size is it? The 2nd pic ought to narrow it down. The clearance hole in the servo mounting plate (which the nutplate is screwed to) is 0.22".

    Please help identify this nutplate

pic1 pic2 It is found on the corners of a B/King KS27xC autopilot servo, for the two mounting bolts. Installers have a habit of "losing" these rare parts and screwing the servo in with a bolt and a nut, which is often a 2-man job to remove or refit, due to difficult access. I need to get...

    Battery Life

I had a Gill fail after 5 years too. It failed very suddenly and totally. I got stranded at an aircraft dealer in France and got fleeced $2000 for a new starter motor :) I then did another 5 years on a Concorde which never failed to start the engine perfectly but was reported as having failed...

    Tyre substitution

Wasn't me. My tyres (tires) are the Goodyear ones. And while the NY IFU is indeed the FAA FSDO in charge of Europe (and Africa and the Middle East AFAIK) everybody who can do so avoids dealing with them. It was them who said an EHSI is an EFIS, and anyway they have stopped doing 337s for...

    Tyre substitution

From what I hear elsewhere, I agree. The problem is that if you ask enough FSDO inspectors, you will eventually find one who tells you a 337 is needed to put avgas in your tank. I had several inspectors in one FSDO (east coast) tell me absolutely, no question, that a Sandel SN3500 EHSI is an...

    Tyre substitution

Why don't you post that on socata.org? From the PM you sent me, you were more than happy about my fate there in 2008, for disagreeing with some people.

    Tyre substitution

I can't post the actual text because it was posted on a type specific members-only site (whose owner owns copyright to all posts anyway) but it was reported that a dealer for a certain turboprop (in current production) got busted by the FAA for installing identical-spec tires but of a brand not...

    Tyre substitution

I have seen it claimed that on Part 23 aircraft only the specific tyres listed in the IPC may be fitted. Allegedly, the only way to fit different ones (even of the same size etc) is via a 337 field approval (or an STC if there is one). Reportedly, the FAA has enforced this at a particular...

    Anybody using oxygen generators?

You would need a very high oxygen generation rate to achieve 1.2psi of oxygen, given all the leaks. Much much more than 3 litres/minute. Also you would need a customised oxygen generator, which vents the nitrogen outside the cockpit. The present medical models vent it out of the box i.e...

    Anybody using oxygen generators?

AFAIK no. In a mixture of gases (like air) each gas behaves as if it was the only gas present. Imagine you have two equal volume tanks joined by a tube. Tank 1 has oxygen at 10psi. Tank 2 has nitrogen at 10psi. What will happen is this: Oxygen will push its way through the tube 1 -> 2 until...

    Anybody using oxygen generators?

You are screwed by the law of partial gas pressures. Let's say the overall air pressure is 8psi (around FL180). 21% of this is due to oxygen, so the oxygen pressure is 21% of 8 i.e. 2psi. If you now start pumping oxygen into the cockpit, and do enough of it to compensate for the reduced...
