    IFR Currency At Home

I fly IFR for every single flight now. So I'm getting good practice with all kinds of approaches, though I can't log them in the plane unless I have a Safety Pilot. I feel super current. The sim at home, which I have verified is an FAA ATD, allows me to remain current officially as well, as...

    KMRY Approaches (?)

This newbie IFR pilot is flying to Monterey this weekend, and it's almost certain to be one of those foggy California Coast IFR marine layer approaches. Question...for those who use KMRY...the ILS comes in over the ocean...which probably results in a tailwind and is the opposite direction from...

Van Nuys (KVNY) Prop Park: Any PIREPS?

Toured the new Prop Park (http://theparkvny.com/) today at KVNY (Van Nuys). It looks amazing...2 nice pilot lounges, conference room, dedicated fuel station, even a place to wash planes with all the amenities. An "upscale" GA restaurant is coming. Thinking of moving my plane there. Anyone...

    IFR Currency At Home

Gas is the least expensive part of owning. You'd be surprised. Like I said above, you can buy a Flythissim and sell it when you're done with IFR. Amazing bargain when you think of it that way.

    IFR Currency At Home

Thanks for the answer...good links. I have confirmed with www.flythissim.com...it's a YES! For those concerned about money...Flythissim's, yes, are expensive. But there's a robust used market. Many folks buy used, or buy new and sell after they get their IFR. I decided to keep...

    IFR Currency At Home

New FAA regs allow for IFR currency at home without an instructor, as long as you have an FAA-approved ATD (I have www.flythissim.com and it's approved). Does anyone know if these new regulations are in place yet? Can I now log currency without my instructor or do the new regs take place later?

Bonanza Down Near Whiteman Airport (Pacoima) - 1 Fatality

Just talked to my instructor...who was also Scott's instructor. He expects to be interviewed, as he was the most recent instructor. It's unclear right now...all we know is Scott declared an emergency and it looks like he was headed for the highway, but it was packed with traffic. He was...

Bonanza Down Near Whiteman Airport (Pacoima) - 1 Fatality

This one hits home...a friend and colleague...Scott Watson of Disney. We were both "older" pilots having gotten our IFR's recently at the same time from the same instructor and we are both technology leaders in the entertainment industry. He had an older Arrow and his pride and joy: an...

    Beechcraft down in Sylmar

According to one report, it's a friend of mine, Scott Watson who worked at Disney. With fingers crossed I so hope it's not true.

Anyone have any info on this Catalina crash?

I live part time on the island and have landed my SR22 here at least 75 times...lost count. Here's my perspective: * The runway is 3000 feet, so it's not a short one. * I come in a bit high intentionally, because Cirrus SR22's drop like lead balloons when you cut power...and if I lose power, I...

    IFR and Bravo

Pilotedge...love this site! And no. This was real IFR out of KOAK. Last I studied the FAR's, 20 feet below assigned altitude was not a violation. From the OP...well I guess I should have added I just got my IFR ticket, so hopefully I get a "free pass" on the dumb ques tion. My...

    IFR and Bravo

OK...so here's a crazy one...my IFR clearance leaving KOAK (Oakland) was to climb to 3000 feet on the Nimitz 5 DP and then to expect higher from ATC. Thing is, 3,000 feet is the bottom of the SFO Bravo and they didn't even mention Bravo. I intentionally flew 20 feet lower than assigned. When...

Just passed my instrument written. 92%

Another suggestion...do your own memory sheet. I summarized everything I felt I needed to know on 2 pages of small print. Just the act of doing this helped me remember everything.

Just passed my instrument written. 92%

63 here...just got IFR ticket, 92 on written. I took a 40 year break from flying. My advice...enjoy the study...make a hobby of it. If you don't enjoy the detail of IFR, ask yourself if IFR is for you. IFR is so different from VFR: intense, technical, details matter, etc. It helps if you...

    SR-20

If it means anything, on the Cirrus website (COPA), the nickname for the SR20 is UPDT...under powered death trap. While that's a bit harsh and over the top, the name stuck. Generally, the SR20 is viewed as a trainer and for non-challenging flights (avoid high altitude take offs, situations...

    Palm Springs Airport Question

From the OP...I already have a vacation home near Big Bear (Green Valley Lake...actually a much better alternative IMHO...cheaper, low key, just as or more beautiful: www.green-valley-lake.com/). Back to my question in case anyone is interested in my topic: I contacted Signature, and yes, they...

    Palm Springs Airport Question

I travel to Palms Springs frequently and may actually move there. Though Signature is great, I HATE leaving my Cirrus SR22 out in the 120 degree sun. Besides the potential for cosmetic damage, I understand this can be rough on the avionics as well, not to mention what it's like to get into...

    Flight simulators for IFR training

From a Flythissim, X-plane, and long-time Microsoft sim owner: Flythissim paid for itself over and over. If you are really concerned about the cost, sell when you're done with IFR. There's a robust market for Flythissim, because it just "plane" works and it is FAA approved (you can now stay...

    Commercial versus Instrument Rating

I believe as of last week they further dropped it completely, per AOPA live. They did it in two stages.
