Teardrop Entry - Doesn't Make Sense?

I'd like to add that executing a teardrop will give you more time on the inbound segment as opposed to performing a parallel entry, which will likely get you on the inbound course closer to the fix. This extra time will come in handy to get your house in order.

How did you prep for your oral exam?

This was pretty much the way mine went down earlier this year. And this is one situation where you can't BS your way out. The best preparation is through your instructor playing the role of the examiner.

    Instrument Training

Denver is correct in a lot of respects. There is so much antiquated material still remaining in the test bank, such as Microwave Landing Systems and LORAN. Although they are being decommissioned at a pretty good clip, there are plenty of ADF questions as well. I took my test earlier this...

    VFR into IMC

Nothing will kill you quicker than penetrating IMC if you aren't trained for it, and don't kid yourself into believing "how hard could it be?" It happened to me once in my 30 years of flying, I was in a 172 looking down at a chart and when I looked up I was in cloud. It didn't take 20 seconds...

    GTN750 and Instrument Work

I did my instrument training using a GTN 750 so it's all I know. However, at home I have a simulator along with Reality XP Garmin 530W setup and used it extensively during my training. I found the 530 to be quite capable and wouldn't have any problems using it if I found myself in an aircraft...

    Oh what a feeling

It's like frfly172 said, it's a confidence builder and once the novelty wears off I'm sure I'll be filing for the smoother altitudes. But for now I just need to know that I am safe, confident and comfortable. Even if it is a bit bumpy.

    Oh what a feeling

This past weekend I took my first major IMC trip since passing my check ride. After looking at the cloud tops on DUATS I purposely filed for an altitude which would put me in the soup and keep me there for a greater portion of the journey. About two minutes after departure I entered IMC and it...

    Holding Pattern Tips?

Just like there are artistic people and mathematical people, there are those that can easily conceptualize. I am not one of them and no matter how hard I try to look at the HSI and figure out how the hold will look from my present position - sometimes just two minutes away - I just can't do it.

    Holding Pattern Tips?

I recently passed my check ride and just like a lot of people here, I couldn't wrap my head around holds for many, many hours. After a while I finally did get them conceptually on paper, but entering them was another story. By the time I took my ride I finally had them down. Here is what works...

    Interpretation of a fix

Thanks for the explanation. Just as I thought, there isn't much use for a fix of this type with our miracle in the sky systems. I never did get the hang of the KNS80 and never used it to its full potential when I had access to one.

    Interpretation of a fix

I'm not quite clear why I would specifically file a fix like this. Can you provide an example?

    Interpretation of a fix

I guess my question wasn't as off-the-wall as I thought.

    Interpretation of a fix

That's what I pretty much thought but needed verification. The other question is, I assume that this is what the ATC computer generates but would I actually be given this in a clearance?

    Interpretation of a fix

I've seen this shorthand a few times but am not quite sure how to interpret it. Examples: SBJ113035 CCC315015

How I almost/did fail the checkride because..

This is what I did. I got as much information from others that took their ride with the same DPE and it paid off. The ride was exactly as others had written about, where I was going, what approaches I would do, where to hold and airwork. But make no mistake, even knowing ahead of time where...

IR to fly approaches and fly in crummy weather OR to go VFR on top

Two outstanding quotes. I knew when I got my plane two years ago that I needed an IR if I wanted to go anywhere with a high level of confidence that I could actually make it. The concrete wall is right on because I found myself stranded recently (before I got the rating) because the forecast...

IR to fly approaches and fly in crummy weather OR to go VFR on top

Actually, I've been doing this using this same feature that appear in DUATS and Garmin Pilot and is how I've been selecting my routes. But alas, when the clearance comes through over the headset it's not what I thought it was going to be.

IR to fly approaches and fly in crummy weather OR to go VFR on top

Thus far I haven't been cleared as filed yet.

IR to fly approaches and fly in crummy weather OR to go VFR on top

Interesting post. I spent so much time and effort on my rating that I feel totally at ease in IMC and (other than the boredom) don't mind spending an extended period of time flying through it.
