Plane rental/CFI in St Louis, MO area?

To close this thread out, thanks for suggesting Big River Aviation. I ended up flying last Friday with Paul in his 1964 172. Flew over to KSET, then down the river to KCPS and then back to KALN. Other then a student doing touch and goes at KSET, I didn't see or hear another GA plane flying...

Big Bear Air Fair on August 26th

Its one of the best events to check out static warbirds, you can get much closer than most shows. A bunch of warbirds are flown up from the museum in Chino. Last show the P-38 was there, on the flight line, totally unattended and not roped off. Very cool to check out so close.

    Landing on water

The Cessna 172 POH is pretty specific, they want you to touch down level at a 300 fpm decent rate. I assume this to plant the gear in the water fast and hard, belly flop if you will to prevent flipping. Skimming it in at minimium speed sounds like a recipe for a flip in a fixed gear plane as...

    Briggs Stratton too lean?

This is California, we have to abide by all of them! One point that may not have been clearly stated, the OP is in California, we get different engines/carbs on power equiptment than the rest of the country. So you guys out side of CA may not be having problems, but us in CA are because we get...

The "Shark" Twin Otter Crashed in Perris Valley

Statement from Skydive Perris (plane owner) today on Facebook: "On Wednesday, one of the fondly nicknamed planes in our fleet, Super Blue / Blue Shark was landing from a routine flight after dropping all the jumpers. Just prior to landing the pilot experienced a severe wind shear which created...

The "Shark" Twin Otter Crashed in Perris Valley

Its not "Shark Air", thats the grey one. "Super Blue" shark is the one that crashed. I can still remember the pink and teal Aloha Air colored carpet from when i was jumping out of it ~16 years ago, before the shark paint job. Better pics...

    Basicmed and color vision deficiency

Yes, obtaining a SODA is an option, however the caveat is if you fail it, your Night flying restriction becomes permanent, it can never be removed. Many people are not willing to take that risk when there are options, such as finding an AME that uses a testing method you can pass, or now fly...

    Landing tips

You just need more practice, it took me 140 ish landings before I could solo at around 25 hours. I don't know what size airport you fly out of, but go to a small, untowered field and knock out 8-10 per lesson for a while and it will come to you in no time.

Plane rental/CFI in St Louis, MO area?

Thanks for the lead, so far that the only person I've found renting planes at KALN. I'll check those out, thanks. Hahah. Family reunion to see the side of the family not smart enough to move to the west coast :) That is pretty much my plan, 2500 msl with flight following looks like it...

Flight school implementing some pretty harsh new rules

The issue is what do I file when I just want to fly 25-50 miles away, do some lazy sightseeing and return at my leisure when I have a plane with 5 hrs of fuel onboard? Like I said, I fly for fun, not go get from point A to point B and back to point A. Tough to follow their rules in that...

One thing that should have been taught to you in basic training, but was not.

Going around after touching down briefly and the stall horn is going off after a bounce. My first one was on the 3rd solo landing! We had done go arounds before, but from ~100 feet when the approach was bad or falling apart. Luckally a 150 will climb with 40 deg flaps with just me in it...

    Advancing the throttle on shutdown

That is pretty much the procedure at the place I rent for all their aircraft. p lead check, then 1700 rpm for 15 seconds with the mixture out about an inch, back to 1000rpm then pull the mixture to kill. I always figured it was to burn off any buildup on the plugs during taxi in.
