    Who likes Block Altitudes?

I request block altitudes to stay between layers or on top when ice is likely. Sometimes use it for descents when it seems the controller is planning a turbine descent profile for me.

    Old fuel receipt

It was back to the future today. I bought 65.6gals of 100LL for $164.00. Thats $2.50/gal. I flew up to Rifle, Co where the county heavily subsidizes fuel sales for one weekend a year. What a great feeling fueling with moderately priced gas. The plane definitely flew faster on the way home...

    Which Airport in/near Pittsburgh

I wanted to thank all of you for your input. I will probably arrive late on Friday afternoon and hate the thought of negotiating traffic through the Squirrel Hill Tunnel and onto Monroeville. Since I have not lived in Pgh. for 50 years I have little recollection how far the drive is from...

    Which Airport in/near Pittsburgh

I will be heading to Pittsburgh in August for a reunion. I was wondering if AGC or Arnold Palmer (Latrobe)would be best. I need a rent car and prefer cheap gas. I will be staying in Monroeville and partying in Little Boston. I have not been to Pittsburgh for many years so opinions about...

    Sacramento to KAPA

Jake, I fly Denver- Chico a fair amount. KSAC-KOGD will put you through restricted areas and MOAs. Either go around the south side (way south) of your proposed route or fly Reno- Lovelock- Battle Mountain- Wendover. You can usually talk to center across the desert if you are 12-14K and they...

Flying to Cancun then on to Costa Rica

Rusty, Here is a little info about your proposed trip. You can get a Cuban overflight permit from several sources. Jim Parker (CaribbeanFlyingAdventures) is one source. The Mexicans would like you to arrive in Cozumel instead of Cancun and price it accordingly. Costa Rica is a nice place...

Flying Keys/Caribbean - Meetup or Tips?

John, Let me make a few more suggestions. Join the Caribbean Flying Adventures Group. Jim Parker (group leader) answers phone calls and has a web page that has a lot of helpful details. I do not know the range of your airplane but the long leg will probably be from the Bahamas to Dominican...

Flying Keys/Caribbean - Meetup or Tips?

John, January 2013 traveled to Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, St. Kitts, St Croix and back to Dominican Republic. Had a good time at each destination. Need to file EAPIS into and out of Puerto Rico. I have traveled a lot in Latin America and the Caribbean over the years and have noticed...

    Historical Colorado Aviation Chart

Danger Area is likely warning of artillery fire around Camp Hale. R-2601 on current maps (Colorado Springs area) was called a Danger Area on the chart you show. R-2601 is used for a bombing range and artillery fire. Another Danger Area on the chart was the Buckley Bombing Range south of the...

    Personal Locator Beacon

I own a 406 PLB and carry it around in the side pocket of the airplane. If I know I will be riding a ATV in a remote area I take it with me. When I am flying over water I wear it around my neck (lanyard). I think they are a good idea. I was flying over the Caribbean in January. My passenger...

    Santa Fe and "mountain flying"?

Jim, I would agree that SAF is pretty doable. The big thing to remember is to lean the engine on takeoff. If you are too rich you will get some less power, if too lean a lot less power. Takeoff distance and rate of climb will be noticeably different.

    POA Caribbean Adventure Caravan

I just got back from two weeks in the Caribbean. Prices seemed a little lower than last year and less hassle with customs, and lower fees. No 406 required but nice to have. Gas low side $6.75, high side $7.40. Stopped in Stella Maris, Puna Cana DR, San Juan PR, St. Kitts (no 100LL), St...

SB569A - exact start of 12 year deadline?

I was affected by that SB/AD. My engine had 1200 on it since new. The AD caused me to tear the engine down which I would not have done otherwise. It cost me about $20K to do all this. I have owned one airplane or another for the past forty years all have had ADs that needed compliance. This...

    FAR 61.31g -Pressurized aircraft section

Jaybird, Cessna T210 and Mooney TLS are certified to 25K. I have owned both and never saw a need to operate at that level. If something happens to the Ox system (it happens) you have a real emergency. Engines wear out quickly when they are operated in the mid 20's.

Flying to Elko Nevada. Anyone been there?

I used to stop for gas in Elko a couple of times a year. My input is to navigate carefully around the restricted airspace. The terrain is rough but flyable. Best to use an airplane that likes 12-14K altitude (some Ox might be useful). When I fly over that part of the world I use flight...

Does this pass the sniff test

This idea is not new. I can remember instructors (?) giving dual to their students(?) in Beech 18's.

    New ICAO Flight Plan Requirement

Jaybird, Check your manual but I spoke with on of the King reps on the phone months go and he said they did not have room on the card for those new RNAV waypoints. The old fashion SIDS and STARS are on the KLN 94 database. Some of these will be going away in the future.

    New ICAO Flight Plan Requirement

I do not think you get an RNAV SID or STAR unless you are flying something without propellers. Airlines wanted steep climbs and fast climb speeds. The new RNAV stuff starts tomorrow in Denver and my controller friends say Turboprops won't get them. If you get one make sure you have the...

    Turbo for Little Hills

Ben, I have been operating (owning) turbo airplanes for forty years. The turbo gives you flexibility in your operations. Sometimes it really helps and sometimes it is just along for the ride. On a few occasions you get a huge ground speed but most of the time only a little. I live in the...
