Who here plays a musical instrument?

I had some friends that were starting a rock band and asked if I wanted to play bass. I bought a bass and 1 week later we practiced 3 songs. That was 20 years ago. I've been playing locally ever since. Right now my son and I are putting another band together to try it again. Fun hobby but it's a...

    KFF!!

My first question is did your instructor have to jump in and help you "save" it? If not, then my opinion is you're getting close. It might not have been perfect but if you corrected your mistakes without "needing" the instructor to save you, you're on the right path to solo. You got this. Good...

    King 86 ADF

When I took my ifr check ride, I had to pick up my dpe at a neighboring airport then fly to my home airport to do the precision approaches. No gps, only dual VORs and an ADF but no ndb approach. All when well until the ride back to his airport where he asked if I could fly an ndb approach. I...

    Handheld airbag/crash protection

Sounds like a good idea. I'm not sure what might be the best though. Pillows? Foam? Helmet?

    IFR Check Ride Questions

I totally agree with keeping up with the written questions. If you can pass the written going into your checkride, I would bet you can pass the oral pretty easy.

    IFR Check Ride Questions

When I took my IFR the DPE was more interested in the planning than all of the finite details. He told me in advance to plan a trip to an airport. Then when I got to my checkride, he asked me how I did it. When I showed him the brief in Garmin Pilot, he wanted me to explain what all of the...

ForeFlight was a crash monster yesterday!

I never got to use the cards or tape but heard about them. I remember when I went to order my first modem and my computer guy had never heard of 56k. He thought 14,400 was fast enough for anything we wanted to do. He couldn't believe how fast it was.

I'm in the same boat as you. We installed 2 King Nav/comms and a GMA340 audio panel a few years ago, now we're looking for GPS and I can't find anyone to install anything used because they're too busy with ADSB still. We did save a bunch of money installing the radios and audio panel ourselves...

Garmin GPS 500 good and bad?

I do have the rack space (the ADF could go) and my thought was to install a switch/annunciator on the CDI but if I have to spend $4300 to upgrade to WAAS, it doesn't make any sense. By the time I paid $1500 for the unit and $4300 to upgrade, it's more expensive than a GTX175. I thought I could...

Garmin GPS 500 good and bad?

I just came across a Garmin GPS 500 which I had never heard of before and think I can get for about $1500. According to Garmin's web site the "GPS 500 includes the popular features of the GNS 530 — minus the nav and comm." I don't know if it's been updated to WAAS or not or what that would cost...

Flying your own plane to work

I have a few clients 150 miles away so I fly whenever I can. Normally driving is 3 hours door to door. I can fly it in 1:45 door to door. Besides, flying is WAY more fun.

Garmin Pilot on an old iPad?

Does it work? Yes. Is it slower than snot? Yes. I've used it on my 2012 iPad II but I wouldn't want to be in the soup relying on it for approach plates or low level IFR charts. It takes WAY too long to load.

Not to get into the legalities but can you log that time? I have no experience in simulators, just curious.

    IFR Acronyms

They will get easier as you use them and hear them more often. As the others have said, if you learn the concepts, the acronyms will come. Just know where to look up the others.
