Hypothetical question on transatlantic aircraft selection

Yes they do, but they are so darn cheap and so darn capable that perhaps a second pilot becomes less of an issue. In any event, a second pilot is a good idea for international trips anyway. The workload is greatly increased with unfamiliar places, language dialects, unfamiliar procedures and...

Hypothetical question on transatlantic aircraft selection

If we are talking old jets, an IAJet 1124 Westwind has plenty of range, payload and speed. And they are dirt CHEAP! 2200nm miles range @ 410 knots for only 1/2 million. What plane has more capability for less? A guy around here operates a couple in a partnership deal, he bought the last...

Hypothetical question on transatlantic aircraft selection

Distance from Gander International Airport to Keflavík International Airport is 1371 nautical miles, easy peasy from that point on.

Hypothetical question on transatlantic aircraft selection

I would ratchet down a bit. What’s your hurry? You have plenty of $$ so enjoy the journey. Invested wisely, 9.5 mil could easily net you about $450,000 per year in dividends which are often taxed at lower rates than normal income. Some pipeline or other partnership investments pay 6% to 11%...

Anyone heard about turning LORAN back on in CONUS?

I have done a bit of reading on the benefits of loran. It seems Loran is highly resistant to jamming, unlike GPS which is easily jammed. The newer Loran technology is nearly as accurate as GPS (non-waas) and because only a few Loran transmitters are required for worldwide navigation...

Can GPS units become obsolete so that it must be replaced?

Updates are only required for approaches. Without updates you can still navigate enroute and in terminal airspace as long as you verify the waypoint info. Basically what you are left with is a darn good VOR like navigator with DME capability. Still of some value by my estimation.

    KLN 94 Install Cost

Idahoflier: Imagine the installer spends 15 hours installing your legacy GPS. He flips the switch and it doesn’t work. Now what? Are you still going to pay him for the install? Does King still offer tech support to help him troubleshoot the problem? Do you try to find another used...

    KLN 94 Install Cost

A few thoughts on this often discussed subject: 1. Lack of database support does NOT make an otherwise IFR legal GPS suddenly unusable for IFR operations. It would still be legal for enroute and terminal operations as long as you verified the data for each waypoint. Approaches would not be...

    VOR off course

FAR 91.171 is pretty clear on how to perform VOR checks. Here is the way to do an air check: (i) Select a VOR radial that lies along the centerline of an established VOR airway; (ii) Select a prominent ground point along the selected radial preferably more than 20 nautical miles from the VOR...

    IRA Checkride with single VOR/GS

Yes, it can be done, and often was before GPS. Years ago, I was an Army helo pilot. Did my IFR ride in the helicopter with a single Nav receiver and NDB, no DME or GPS. Holding over an airway intersection with a single VOR, Localizer approach with step downs, NDB approach, 0/0 instrument take...

What to do; upgrade the plane or the avionics

You don’t NEED a GPS to get an instrument rating. Simple solutions are cheaper and more sensible for simple airplanes. Inexpensive airplane, inexpensive solution. High dollar airplane, high dollar solution.

Lycoming IO360-A1A overhaul cost on a Mooney M20F

My O-360 was overhauled by Zephyr. Total cost for everything including removal and re-install, hoses, mags, etc was $27,000 about 5 yrs ago. For a fuel injected engine I would think you will be close to $30,000. Plus you will likely have to do the prop as well, so you better research the...

WOW have you seen this Reklaw video

Everyone has their own level of comfort in aviation. I must admit my comfort level is vastly different at 62 than it was at 22. Might be that I’m much older, might be the memory of friends lost to aviation, or maybe the realization of just how fast things can go horribly wrong. I will admit...

WOW have you seen this Reklaw video

I’m a professional pilot who lives nearby this event. My wife and I attended a couple of years ago, we drove. I don’t do grass runways, I don’t even like short paved runways unless I know the airport well. We were both appalled by the “Wild Wild West” atmosphere and stayed for about an hour...

Jeppesen discontinues NavData for GX series

Depending on the flight manual supplement, I believe you can legally fly IFR with expired nav data in the enroute and terminal phase of flight, however you will not be able to fly approaches. The limitation is that you would have to verify the accuracy of the waypoint data as you use them. So...

What to do; upgrade the plane or the avionics

Here is a link to a guy selling a Mk12D WITH a glideslope for $300. Slide yours out and slide this one in. Find a cheap CDI and you are good to go. https://www.beechtalk.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=157338&view=unread#unread
