VFR Clearance took forever . . . KSAN

There are no new-hire controllers at SAN.

Flying straight in at uncontrolled field?

Very interesting. I see what you're saying now. The reason I never thought the traffic pattern indicators could indicate the direction to turn crosswind is because of this very part of the AFH. Thanks for the link to the AC.

Flying straight in at uncontrolled field?

Wow, I can tell you that this is not being taught at the FAA. They require use of "closed traffic" phraseology and then deduct points from trainees when each of those pattern aircraft are not explicitly cleared for the option each pass.

Flying straight in at uncontrolled field?

It says this right inside the image you posted. "Traffic pattern indicators (indicates the location of base leg)." I agree it's nonsensical to have these when the pattern is standard, but the point of the diagram is to explain the purpose of the traffic pattern indicators, which it appears to...

Fly Direct GORDE then cleared for the ILS 13

As an aside, direct GORDE is pretty typical at East Texas Regional aka Longview aka Gregg County (GGG). Another one that gets people around here is direct WESLI for the ILS Runway 19 at Waco (ACT).

I can see why some potential students give up flying.

New students who are subjected to bad instruction often lack positive outlooks on the learning process. Whenever you can talk to a student pilot about how their journey towards certification is going, even if you "only" have 100 hours, those conversations can enlighten and encourage them...

My father-in-law flipped out at me for taking my wife up during an Airmet Tango

Half the country is currently enveloped in an AIRMET Tango for turbulence. It's hardly a showstopper.

Flying straight in at uncontrolled field?

You can fly straight in. The Pilot/Controller Glossary refers to this practice in its definition of final approach (within the definition of traffic pattern): "An aircraft making a straight-in approach VFR is also considered to be on final approach." Whether or not it is a good decision is your...

    Commercial add-on bust, need advice...

My advice is to be honest with yourself and seek out the most thorough assessment of your performance from your DPE. Although nobody can read tone through a forum post, I get the sense that you may not have let the DPE talk very much once the flight was over. Now if the DPE was incoherent in...

Fly Direct GORDE then cleared for the ILS 13

This is the best solution. A lot of examiners around here like to ensure IFR applicants know how to do just that.

ADM sanity check (VFR over the top)

@cowman, your thought processes sounded good to me. Had the clouds coverage become more dense, you could have also turned around back to scattered conditions if you had to.

    ATC ADSB check

Sounds like two people not understanding what the point of ADS-B is, like the rest of us.

Flight Instructors - Did/Do you enjoy the job?

It's not too bad. I need a 100-hour inspection, and insurance requires a rental-and-instruction policy. I eventually plan to get a physical office, but right now all of my referrals have been word of mouth. I have a website in development but have not had time to publish it. (Not sure it'd even...

Flight Instructors - Did/Do you enjoy the job?

Sure. I teach in and rent out a Cessna 150, and I also teach in other people's aircraft. I operate under a business name Cobalt Aviation. It's a similar setup to Scott's OBX Flight except I typically don't do accelerated courses.

Flight Instructors - Did/Do you enjoy the job?

I do this full time, independent of any schools. I teach in my company's C150 and spend a majority of my time in owners' aircraft teaching them. What I've got going right now is a great setup that allows me to work a reasonable number of hours and get paid a lot better than I would in the flight...

CPL cross countries - what's the point?

That training for a rating or certificate should encompass every possible scenario a pilot will ever face in an eventual flying career is one of the silliest ideas to arise out of the last 10 years. Learning how to deal with the nuances of working in aviation is something done through...

Would anyone know what this is on a 750 Garmin

The blue squares are routine PIREPs according to the GTN 750 manual. I have no idea what the blue line is.

    Mandatory weather briefings for controllers

This reminds me of a story someone posted to the ATC Reddit a few days ago. The topic was "Most ridiculous thing you've ever been told on the job." "Supervisor sent everyone that wasn't plugged in to a hazardous weather briefing and left everyone else plugged in for almost two hours while we...

How often do you get a hold while IFR?

I've had two this spring so far. The first one was for congestion in Dallas. It started out as delay vectors, but we realized what was going on and volunteered to do a published hold on our approach. (ATC liked that a lot.) The second one was a few days ago out of Longview, TX when a flight plan...

Getting near the end of training, trying to work out a few bugs.

Ahh, ok. This sounds much easier than I had originally thought. I have a lot of time with the G1000 but have not used the G500. The dual configuration of the G750 and G650 makes sense now. If I can offer a simplification of the en-route to approach phase of flight, it would be this: You...
