    HAM radio

Is he by any chance a musician? My father-in-law was supposed to become a radio operator when he got drafted in WW2, but he couldn't learn the code. He said he found out later that Army found out that people with musical abilities learned code a lot faster, and were the better operators. My FIL...

Not a lot of people or towns in that part of Ohio. Most of that area is a state forest.

    HAM radio

Years ago, I went to a Hamfest where a guy was selling a military straight key that had a spring clip on the base that would fit over your knee/lower thigh. I was told it was specifically so pilots could send code while flying. There's one for sale on Ebay right now.

    A nifty project

Yes, I've gone the variable power supply route as well. I'm just saying that if you have known good tubes and replace the old paper caps, your risk of cooking something is substantially reduced.

    A nifty project

Using a variable power supply is one way to do it, but you can probably just remove the tubes and test them (good luck with that - I have to drive about 45 minutes one way to get to the nearest tube tester I know of) and replace any bad ones. There are online sources for tubes, but they can get...

    A nifty project

Yeah, I didn't realize that early FM used "channels" instead of frequencies. Oh. well, what's done is done. I kept the radio and antenna, so it may become a future project. I'm getting another one this weekend to make for myself (actually my wife!)

    A nifty project

I recently completed a nifty little project that someone on this forum might be interested in. I was driving down the road and I saw someone throwing out an old console style radio. It turns out it was a Farnsworth Model GK-111, made in 1947. Well, I couldn’t let the thing go to the landfill...

    HAM radio

As long as you are fooling around, you might find this interesting. I stumbled across this about two years ago. It's a short wave radio based in Holland. You can control the radio yourself, and listen to anything the antenna in Holland can pick up, right off your computer. I haven't spent a lot...

    HAM radio

There's an on-line manual for this radio here: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/63359/Grundig-400-Pe.html?page=29#manual and according to this manual, the external antenna plug is a 3.5 millimeter or 1/8 mono plug, like you'd find on a pair of earbuds, for example.

    HAM radio

There are lots of places you can look to get info on how to make up a simple antenna. Here's one: http://hamuniverse.com/shortwaveantenna.html

    HAM radio

Don't know what capabilities that radio has - if this radio has a way to hook up an external antenna, but the other guys are right, make an outdoor wire antenna "as long as you can make it." I made mine out of wire salvaged from an old transformer, and just unwound the wire. My transformer had...

    NA - Another one...

Mom & Dad had the same experience in the early 60's. Dad was honked off about it until the day he died. Never applied for another Sears card, and that guy loved his plastic! Another thing that jumps out at me is that Sears was catalog sales for most of it's existence, yet what is online...

    Magnatometer location in Cherokee 140

Pardon my ignorance, but why install a magnetometer? What is it's use? I'm not trying to troll anyone here. I just want to know the purpose of a magnetometer in an aircraft. is it for navigation, or are you looking for something like minerals?

Defective Flux Capacitor Causes Crash Landing

Steingar: Just as a point of reference, I was telling my kids about this story. My two daughters are in their early 20's, and my one daughter's boyfriend (also a 20-something) was there as well. One of my daughters did not get the joke, the other knew "flux capacitor" was a fake part, and the...

Defective Flux Capacitor Causes Crash Landing

I went on to the Boston 25 News station website. This video is not there, but there is another, that shows the pilot. The "Haselton" she refers to in the clip was the pilot, who definitely was not born before Back to the Future came out. He might not even be able to shave yet!
