Found a use for vectors to final

I think it will work but suspend sequencing. If you unsusp, it will sequence you to the MAP (and susp) since you're already on the ground and there. EDIT *****SORRY**** I was assuming you're coming back to the airport, which you're not (cuz that's what I do a lot). If you activate on the...

Using a 12 V battery charger as a power supply

I would not do it directly. My guess is that ordinary battery chargers do not have good filtering on their outputs and rapid voltage variations can damage your avionics. (They are not power supplies). But, a good battery can act as an adequate filter for the charger. So, if you hook up your...

    Clearing fouled plugs

THANK YOU! That is so astute of you. In actuality, I didn't have a problem...just heard in a meeting about this other method people were using and wanted to know more about it. Love that technical term! Could only imagine ... thanks for the perspective. That is also how I was taught. And...

    Clearing fouled plugs

Thanks everyone... BUT.... Let me do a quick reset... as much as I appreciate the info about plugs that resist fouling, advice about trying to not let the plugs foul, info about valve sticking, checking for plug fouling post-flight, etc.... yes - I appreciate all that - Thank you - BUT...

    Clearing fouled plugs

I was at a CFI meeting yesterday where the topic of clearing fouled plugs came up. Seemed everyone there said the way to do it was to go to full power (mixture full rich) for about 4 seconds. Is that the way to do it? I've never tried it. Back in the 80s-90s, I was taught to lean at runup rpm...

Is carb heat really necessary when 80F?

Ouch! You're so right! Mea Culpa.

Is carb heat really necessary when 80F?

I have to agree with the OP. If the outside air temp is 80 degF or higher, there is little chance of getting carb icing, since a 70 degF drop from 80 is still above freezing. Would there likely to be condensation and water into the carb? Yes. But his question is about icing. Do I agree to not...

    More Fun With Alternates

Interesting. As a corrollary, is that logic the same for the situation of approaches being NA for when the tower is closed? At my airport, KHWD, both approaches have recently being noted as just that: "NA when tower closed".

IFR Training - instructor and plane options

This is what you should do. As you have surmised, having an advanced cockpit requires you to be proficient in all that button pushing and knob twisting. If you train with it, you will learn it at your instructor's terms. I suggest getting your IR with the "basic" plane, the more basic, the...

    no need for clearance

Sorry about that. Point taken. Really bad mistake by the pilot.

    no need for clearance

Pretty common with bravo airports. But usually phrased as "line up and wait (or something like it), after departure, left turn heading xyz". Or Just something similar. Just "turn left heading 020" is unusual and possibly wrong phraseology. A pilot experienced in bravo ops would not have taken...

What are your personal minimums for a no approach airport?

No argument here. But still better to hustle down for the stated reasons. The only time I don't is on a glideslope...reason obvious.

What are your personal minimums for a no approach airport?

Well...you can only go down when ATC lets you go down. We're talking IFR after all. Having said that, whenever given the opportunity to go lower I almost always take it and not waste time. Better to get below the clouds sooner. And be able to see my airport from farther out.

What are your personal minimums for a no approach airport?

OK...thanks for clarifying. What I think you are saying is that you normally want around 2000AGL when VFR (as your personal minimum). So, when vectored to an airport without approaches on an IFR flight plan, assuming the MVA is lower than that, how would we descend, assuming we can bust out of...

What are your personal minimums for a no approach airport?

Others have already inferred you are talking about going to an airport without any approaches on an IFR flight plan. But you did not say that. So, you may want to clarify... And, I don't know if you are IFR rated or are training for it or just interested. You ask about descending... on an IFR...
