How long does it usually take for a civil service employee to get promoted?

Just wondering but how long does it take to move up the ranks and get promoted in a civil service job? I recently learned a coworker of mine who is an airport operations duty officer has been working at the airport for close to 10 years and he isn't even technically a supervisor yet, although...

Quick Question about Flightaware's Color-coded METAR dots at airports

Hey guys. I just have a quick question about Flightaware's color-coded METAR dots when you click on the map settings to show other airports in the area. There is a red dot called LIFR or Low IFR and there is a magenta/purple dot called BCAT1. I want to know what does BCAT1 mean and if the...

    Time change....

If we don't have Daylight Savings Time in the Mid-Atlantic states, we could see the sunrise around 4 AM in the morning during the summer solstice! And the morning civil twilight could be as early as 3:45 AM or 3:50 AM!

Should vehicles on roadways have vehicle-to-vehicle CTAF radios?

I am wondering if vehicles that drive on highways and on roads should be equipped with short-range CTAF-style radios. Would it increase safety especially on crowded highways when you are trying to pass a vehicle but other vehicles are whizzing on past you? Is see-and-avoid enough or do you...

Quick Question about ATIS for a major international airport

At PHL I noticed that the ATIS is announced using a computer-generated voice. Is this true for all major international airports in the U.S.? Or is it for some certain airports or only just for PHL?

Pilots, air traffic controllers shifting to text messaging

I listened to the PHL ATIS last night and it says "CPDLCDCL service available" not "CPDLCL". I think in the previous post here in this thread "DCL" stand for digital clearances. Does that mean they text message the clearance to pilots on the clearance delivery frequency?

Pilots, air traffic controllers shifting to text messaging

Oh ok, thanks for the info. I could have sworn I heard "CPDLCL" instead of "CPDLC" in the ATIS. I was wondering what does the extra "L" stand for?

Pilots, air traffic controllers shifting to text messaging

Quick question, but I think this may be related to this thread. When I work in airport ops at PHL International Airport, in its ATIS it says "CPDLCL service available". What does "CPDLCL" stand for and what does this service do?

    Phone number for ATIS?

Thanks guys! Just called up the CDW ASOS. It got me directly to a prerecorded message although, this is the same message you would hear when the control tower at CDW is closed for the night. Right now at this time, the tower isn't closed yet so I am not sure why I did not get the ATIS.

    Phone number for ATIS?

Thanks for the information guys, but my question is if I call the ATIS/ASOS/AWOS number is there a human on the other end of the line that I have to speak to first before getting to the ATIS recording or will it lead me directly to the ATIS recording without talking to anyone?

    Phone number for ATIS?

Just wondering but are there phone numbers you can call to get the ATIS or ASOS/AWOS? If so, if I call, will it lead me straight to the ATIS prerecording or do I have to speak to a live human on the other line before I get the ATIS? I'm just wondering about this.
