    Ca super bloom

New Cuyama (L88) is probably 2 hours from KLVK. Soda Lake is just 12 miles north of there. The entire Carrizo Plain is full of flowers right now. I don’t know about renting a car there since I’ve never tried. You definitely could rent a car in Paso Robles and drive there or just drive around...

1969 Cherokee 140b shoulder harness install

I had these installed in 2008 and surprisingly they are about the same price as then. Installation is pretty simple for an A&P.

    IFR training in non-IFR aircraft

The IFR practical is done in VFR conditions so there is no reason that the airplane must be IFR certified. As long as you can do the approaches and other items in the ACS with your airplane it doesn’t matter. § 61.45 Practical tests: Required aircraft and equipment. Required equipment (other...

    1969 Cherokee run up/fuel valve

I just checked the POH for my Cherokee and Arrow, and an Archer and a Dakota and all of them say that on pre-flight or before starting engine FUEL SELECTOR....desired tank The before takeoff checklist includes: BEFORE TAKEOFF...proper tank Similar with slightly different wording in a Warrior...

    Who invented the VASI?

I was today years old when I found out that there are pilot controlled VASIs just like runway lights.

    1969 Cherokee run up/fuel valve

Number 1 is stupid. If you switch tanks at altitude and there is something clogging the other tank you have plenty of time to switch back. If you switch just before takeoff and there is something wrong with the tank you are close to the ground and have no time to diagnose, let alone fix, the problem

Looking to get Garmin G5 DG/HSI in my Arrow ll at/near KCNO

Keep in mind that if you have the original Piper AutoControl autopilot you’ll need to retain your AI since it provides input to the autopilot and (at least in our aircraft) you can’t use inputs from the G5.

    CFI Renewal

Just finished my Ground Instructor renewal with Sporty’s. The course is free and automated renewal for CFIs is $49. Not too bad but the have the timing off. Some interesting modules take more than an hour if you watch the videos and look up the references. Other irrelevant modules take 20...

    Tabbed FAR/AIM

I never had to refer to the FAR AIM in my PP or IFR oral but for prep and the oral why not download the FARs to your computer and then bold and bookmark the portions you need help remembering. It’s also a lot easier to search if you have it electronically rather than on paper.

Battery replacement as private pilot questions..

I just installed a Concorde battery and the torque value was printed on the battery. I believe it was 70 inch-pounds for mine.

Does a failed annual cancel out the last annual even if inside 12 months?

There are some conditions that make an aircraft unairworthy that don’t preclude getting a ferry permit to fly back to the home base.

    Squirrels ate my car

Nope. My wife had a Datsun stick in the 80s and was driving home when the car started accelerating. She used the clutch to slow it down and pulled off the road into a business park. When I arrived I found that a squirrel had been storing nuts in the engine compartment and one of them was under...

    Refresh a PIPER CHEROKEE 140

I have a Cherokee 140 and it’s a nice plane but I wouldn’t use it as a base for upgrades. At a minimum you should start with a Cherokee 180 with the bigger engine and rear baggage compartment. Here’s a project plane for you for $40K that would be a better starting point.

Why are super vikings so cheap?

One of our EAA members bought the company last year and talked about it at our May 2022 meeting. He owns a machine shop so he can make parts from the original plans. His partner runs a service center in Oklahoma specializing in Bellanca aircraft. https://bellancaaircraft.com They also have a...

Likelihood of having to re-do Neuropsych if letting 3rd class SI expire?

You don’t need a Second Class (commercial) medical to get a commercial rating—you just can’t fly for hire without it. You can take any practical test and instruct with Basic Med. Review § 61.23 Medical certificates: Requirement and duration. (3) for details.
