Announcing on CTAF 15 miles out - why is this a thing?

I like the suggestion reporting the time out, although I follow convention and report distance. If I am coming into a VFR field I try to get at least in the ballpark of the traffic speed, but still can’t fly cub speeds. This was a couple days ago in the Meridian/M600. Coming into a towered...

Wait time for a new cirrus

That is part of it. But also factory warranty support. Some people, like me, have no appetite for unexpected big and costly maintenance events, and have 0 interest in handling anything maintenance related. Support on new planes can be variable, and airframe specific. Right now Cirrus is having...

Buying a composite airplane with a significant damage history

The Diamond is a very strong airframe, and you can fix composite as good as new. BUT, it has to be done really well by an expert in the field, with sign off from the factory engineers before repair. People that make composite aircraft have very elaborate factories, vacuum, ovens, processes and...

    Basic Med above 18,000MSL?

I think the big difference is that a class III if done correctly identifies high risk medical problems for pilot incapacitation, or degraded performance. Some examples include but are not limited to insulin requiring diabetes, seizure disorders, heart failure, coronary artery disease, suicidal...

Quick STALL RECOVERY technique that could be a LIFE SAVER

I wouldn’t be too hard on this guy. I think the way he recovers is pretty good, but he is obviously an advanced stick and rudder guy, so his technique is not going to mesh well with primary training. I think once you understand stalls you realize that you don’t even need power to recover. Just...

As a commercial pilot student can I fly for IOU's?

I think you can if the flight is coincident to your business and less than 20 seats. Or if you make them equity or non-equity owners of your aircraft. As long as you don't advertise.... Complicated. Better to just work for someone else. As to IOU’s?? I think crypto is the best way to go here.

The two happiest days of a pilot...

I have always had a new plane, before selling my old one. The day may come one day, but I am not psychologically ready to wake up knowing that I don't have a plane. Before that time comes, maybe my retirement plan of dying on top of a cute blonde from a case of lead poisoning.... to the back...

When do you slowdown to VA

ouch!! ;-). Any Piper? Those flight school Pipers are plenty strong, but they take inhumane abuse flying low and in choppy air their whole lives, teaching students how to land 10 times an hour. Here is the wing spar on a Piper M600, machined from a solid piece of aluminum. You could stack...

    IFR with summer thunderstorms question

If you want your passengers to ever ride with you again, deviate around anything more than a few thousand feet that looks like a cumulus. A towering cumulus 10-15,000 feet tall can be dangerous to a small plane, and anything 15,000 feet and taller is going to hurt, and after that starts...

Help me understand avionics business models

The labor rate also includes the infrastructure, tooling and support for the technician. But what a crazy job doing one off panels. Seems like an overwhelming process to me. Even for a relatively simple panel.

    Turboprop vs piston question

Not exactly. The jet prop is a heavily modified version of the malibu or the mirage, but the Meridian is not. In fact there are almost no interchangeable parts on a mirage and a meridian. Some of the bigger changes. The empennage is different. 33% larger than the Mirage. The windows are...

    Turboprop vs piston question

This is kind of the right answer. The barber pole of a turbine is kind of like the lower of Vne or Vno in a piston. In essence it has to be able to handle normal turbulence up to max speed. In essence guaranteeing a bigger safety factor for turbine operations. Plus it also has to have a...

To BasicMed or Stay with 3rd Class

    CFI headwind mins

I would encourage everyone to have a max wind component already set. Certainly, there are a lot of variables, but if we as pilots, put too many “it depends”, at the time of the flight, we will find ways of rationalizing ourselves into stupidity. You have to be comfortable with your own max wind...

Diamond down in Lantana (West Palm Beach)

Dang. It is really hard to kill a DA40. About as docile a plane made. RIP.

    What became of Diamond aircraft?

The Diamonds are fun. As long as the weather is pretty decent. I have done some long trips in them. Beats driving ;-). But you just can't get one. I would take a DA40 over a SR20, C172, and they perform a little better than a normally aspirated C182. The view is great, but they can sure get...

    What became of Diamond aircraft?

The demand just so outpaces supply. My DA40 which I sold in 2010 would sell for the same today. They are awesome flight school planes so finding one for sale is tough. But they are still selling them as fast as they can make them.

And people say southerners don't know how to drive in snow!

I grew up in the south occasionally driving in snow and ice. We always had 4-wheel drives so weren’t locked out of getting places. I was raised with the belief thatbsnow and ice were worse in the south. I spent the second half if my life in the mountains where snow and ice is a 6 month event. I...

    Malibu down - Yoakum TX (T85) - 1-17-23 - 4 fatal

The plane in this accident was not a piston. Was a Mirage converted to a jetprop. Very unlikely an engine issue. But the plane for whatever reason was too slow.
