Minneapolis for the weekend - which airport/FBO?

Last time I was there (years ago) you could catch a bus about two blocks from the airport entrance at KSTP. Things are a lot tighter around MIC and STP. Also SGS is so close to the inner ring of the Class B that you can almost reach out and touch the wall while on downwind for runway 34.

    DIY Oxygen setup questions

My Mountain High O2D2 senses via the same tube as it delivers oxygen. What regulators use two tubes with a canula? The only other one I've seen is made by Precise Flight and I think it also used only one tube.

    lighting control

I don't know Cherokees but a lot of airplanes have a power transistor (emitter follower configuration) between the "rheostat" and the panel lights and given the small size of the potentiometer I saw on this thread I'd say that's likely the case there. That's important because one reason the...

    Why no IMC at night?

I suspect for most pilots the answer is one, assuming they are able to learn from their mistakes. ;) Night flight in general has plusses and minuses but IMO if you do fly at night you're better off (i.e safer) if you do it under IFR.

    landing tips? please

The goal for a soft field landing is to touch down as slowly as possible, not as soft as possible. Aside from landing in deep slush or snow, most "real" soft field landings are made on a fairly rough surface so there's really not much point in greasing it on. But the low speed is crucial as is...

Minneapolis for the weekend - which airport/FBO?

Crystal (MIC) is a little closer distance wise but not so much when time is the measure. Thunderbird is at both FCM and MIC and they used to offer a discount at FCM for transients (call and ask). The cheapest fuel at FCM is Modern Avionics (self-serve) at $4.19/gal but they don't have a lot...

    Constant airspeed climb/descent

You're right, my bad. I had a power required curve stuck in my head.

Ahh, that does make a big difference.

    Constant airspeed climb/descent

I agree completely with the 400°F limit but all you need to do is lower the nose and climb at a higher speed. And if you can't keep the cylinders cool with a full rich mixture you might have some baffle problems and/or too low a FF. That said, you're not gonna hurt anything if you keep the...

    Constant airspeed climb/descent

FWIW, max L/D (best glide speed) isn't at the bottom of the drag curve, in zero wind it's the tangent to that curve on a line from the graph's origin.

    Constant airspeed climb/descent

And a small reduction in MAP from full throttle will actually raise the EGT and CHT on most engines. Unless this is required in the POH Limitations section or by TCDS required placard I wouldn't do that.

    Constant airspeed climb/descent

Unless things have changed you don't need to have passed the PPL written test before you solo. You do have to pass a pre-solo quiz but your CFI gives you that AFaIK.

    Constant airspeed climb/descent

That is the right technique (make the vertical speed proportional to the altitude difference) for flying on the instruments but maybe a bit too complex for a new primary student.

    DIY Oxygen setup questions

I don't know anything about the regulator you linked but generally demand regulators won't work with conserving cannuals. Those regulators need to sense the drop in nasal pressure during inhalation and the recycling chamber of a conserving cannula will diminish that to almost nothing. In any...

    Question regarding error in altitude

What model transponder do you have? Some of the newer ones will display the pressure altitude from the encoder. At any altitude that should be close to (i.e within 100 ft) what your altimeter says if you set 29.92 in the Kollsman window.

    Bonanza vs. everything else?

I'm sure they do but I don't recall reading about any Bonanza overruns in the last several years but the gear-ups just keep on happening. FWIW, the gentleman I bought my B55 from flew his VMC approach at something like 120 KIAS (Vso * 1.8) touching down over 100 KTAS when he demoed the plane...

    frustrated.. please advise!!

In addition to what the student and instructor bring to the table, the time required to solo depends heavily on the goals of the pre-solo training. When I got my first training (back when Wilber and Orvile were still alive) the goal of most part 61 (and not just a few part 141) flight schools...

    Too much airplane?

There are two definitions of "too much airplane". One is an airplane that's beyond a pilot's skill and experience level (think 200 hr PPL in a Lear 23). The other is one that's beyond the owner's financial resources. If you buy an airplane you can't afford to fly the usual result is some...
