    Best Puke Bag

I use good quality large kitchen garbage bags. Large enough that the source can put their whole head and shoulders into the bag to catch all the effluent, but easier to roll/fold and store than larger garbage bags.

    O-360 Cylinder Pitting

I apologize if this has been covered in this thread of notes, but my skimming didn't catch it, so, here goes. The discussion so far has focused on the OP's engine question. But airframe issues are also more likely in an airplane that's been in storage for many years. And the consequences of...

    Presidential protection

I suspect the Rehoboth TFR may be having little impact on GA traffic since the center ring doesn't overlap with any public airports. If you are located on the ground within the inner ring, things will get quiet above you. During President Trump's TFRs in central NJ my experience was the...

Hit my first (and hopefully last) bird

I've had one strike. A small bird when I was landing at a class C airport. Tower sent out a person to sample the remains to send for identification. They took care of reporting the strike to the Wildlife Strike Database. It is located here: https://wildlife.faa.gov/home

What is this large heat sink?

Thanks, all. I've been away for a couple of weeks out of communication here. Thanks for all the input. Sure looks like the dimmer. Next time the glareshield is off I'll look at the back side for a label.

What is this large heat sink?

Wish I could without cutting open the bundles of wires. No go so far.

What is this large heat sink?

I believe so. They aren't particularly accessible so can't tell for sure. I rarely touch it, as it's buried under the glareshield. But we have been trying to diagnose some audio issues involving radio transmissions, and the heat sink did not get warm.

What is this large heat sink?

What you described as a heat dissipator is what I meant to communicate with the term heat sink. I agree that it is there to dissipate heat generated at the center. Just can't tell what the center is for:(

What is this large heat sink?

It is riveted to the aluminum structure that you can see behind the heat sink. That is a aluminum angle member about 1 inch in the vertical dimension & 1/2 in in the horizontal, and about 18 inches long. It is located just below the glareshield at the top of the panel, and it ties the top-center...

What is this large heat sink?

No pulsing landing or taxi lights. Only blinking lights are wingtip and tail strobes, and their wingtip power packs are out near the lights.

What is this large heat sink?

There is a large black heat sink bolted to the structural member that runs from the firewall to the top of the instrument panel of my plane (see photo). It isn't well attached and I'd like to either get it removed or moved to a more secure spot. Any idea what instrument it is part of, or what...

Could use some advice re. audio problems

Yes, tested with both a QT Halo non-powered in-ear headset and a basic ASA HS-1A non-powered headset. A couple of the recent "squeal" flights were done using a Lightspeed Zulu 3 ANR headset. All headsets had both the radio and intercom squeals under the base conditions. Most of my testing in...

Could use some advice re. audio problems

The audio system in my plane has developed a series of audio problems and while we (the shop and I) have done a fair amount of troubleshooting we still don't have a good theory as to the cause(s). So I thought I'd ask here for help. The first problem started last February when random...

Finding someone to do maintenance on a Grumman Cheetah/Tiger?

This....Trueflight Aerospace at the Valdosta Regional Airport (https://trueflightaerospace.com/) are the owners of the Grumman type certificates. They are not as active as Fletchair or some of the other Grumman centric shops, but know the type as well as any. I don't think you could want a...

    PIREP - Trig Avionics

I considered a Trig 1090es transponder and was impressed by the electronics, but didn't like the Trig interface. Had to use the left rotary knob to enter each digit of the squawk code one at a time. So I bought a Bendix KT-74 model which is a rebranded Trig unit but with a pushbutton...

    Crackling noise from transpond

Last avionics work was completed last November (the GI-275s). Several months passed before the crackle showed up. The shop will look at the grounds and other connections. I like the suggestion of testing with a separate coax and antenna. I forgot to mention that in the past it had developed...

    Crackling noise from transpond

A few weeks ago a random crackling developed in the audio system of my Tiger. The 1090es King KT-74 transponder is a big factor in the sound, and maybe the cause. In an attempt to isolate the cause I did the following test: 1. Airplane in closed metal hangar at a non-towered airport 2...

Grumman AA1 at high density altitude

If you want the best chance of getting an authoritative answer, best to ask on the Grumman Gang list serv. You can sign up and access it at: http://grumman.net/. There are multiple people on the GG that have experience with AA1X operation out of high altitude airports. There are some nuances...

    TFRs and VFR Flight Plans

No, I was referring to a flight that terminated outside the DC SFRA. Specifically, in the portion that you quoted, "...If you're flying VFR to the portion of the Baltimore area that is outside of the DC SFRA..."

    TFRs and VFR Flight Plans

If you're flying VFR to the portion of the Baltimore area that is outside of the DC SFRA, then all you need insofar as a flight plan is concerned is a VFR flight plan on file. The VFR flight plan does not need to be active (...All aircraft must be on an active IFR or filed VFR flight plan with...
