M01 (General DeWitt Spain) IFR routing

You might want to consider V159, basically right over MEM. I have been routed over the "big airport" several times. Depending on other traffic, FedEx uses 9/27 quite a bit because their sort facility is adjacent to that runway. I much prefer to be over the airport instead of under the...

M01 (General DeWitt Spain) IFR routing

Memphis controllers are great. I suspect you will have zero problems with your plan. If the weather goes down, you can divert to KAWM for somewhat lower minima.

Buying a plane with damage history

If the damage was in 1992, and the airplane has been flying regularly since, no factor.

    VOR impact study

peter Stienmetz did a ton of work to develop an AM radio station overlay for ForeFlight. Really nice to have if you have an ADF to work with: http://steinmetz.org/peter/flying/

    EFB - Flight Planning Apps

ForeFlight is great, and I think the best for IFR. However, I have been playing with FltPlan Go since Boeing announced the price increase for ForeFlight. A little clunky, but not too bad.

Keep up proficiency, not just currency!

A lot of us feel safe because we have GPS navigators in the panel, ForeFlight or similar EFB on our iPad with a backup on our iPhone. Just keep in mind the FAA also likes redundancy and their backup is the MON with something like an ILS within 100 miles. We need to keep our ground based...

    STRUGGLING

I think the best thing you can do, April, is get finished up as quickly as you can. Use the advice earlier in this thread. I never attendecd a ground school session while pursuing my PPL and instrument rating. Instead, I used King Schools videos and took the written tests. Passed both on...

You go, April! Please keep us updated on your progress, and know that you being courageous enough to start this thread will very likely help a lot of other POA members and browsers.

Out of state alternative Basic Med?

I know at least one practitioner of alternative medicine who is a state licensed MD. As far as going out of state, where I live it is very common.

    STRUGGLING

Hi April. Welcome to the wonderful world of flying! I know someone who loved to fly, but quit after he started flying solo. He was terrified of being lost, and his instructor was not good at teaching how to keep up with where you are. Sad. Where are you taking lessons? Sometimes...

Is a second GPS needed vs a second Nav radio?

I think it makes sense to have one GPS navigator and another NAV radio that uses ground based equipment. A 650 and 750 would double up on that idea, and may be overkill, but I think better than having all your eggs in the GPS basket. Most of us say something like "it won't happen to me" as far...

    Opinions Wanted: G5 Panel Rearrangement

If I were in your position, I don’t think I would let the depth of the DG control the decision. I would try something different.

Help me spend up to 165k

An awful lot of folks, including here, “disrespect” a c-172, but they are very capable airplanes, fairly inexpensive to operate (if there is such a thing in aviation!), less expensive to repair and maintain than a lot of airplanes, and with a 180 hp can motor right along.

    Cross-country frustrations

Missing the mark by a few tenths of a mile, or even four miles would not negate the intended learning for the student pilot in my opinion, but I can understand the DPE’s reluctance to accept that. I would have sent her back home too. Her CFI needs to pay more attention. Her NAV log must not...
