KML Overlay of AM Radio Stations in the US

Thanks Pete That looks like it was a big project and I will get a lot of use out of the file. I’ve already added it as a layer to my ForeFlight and have checked the magnetic headings to the local radio stations. I like flying ADF approaches and listen to the radio on cross country flights...

    Nose wheel shimmy c182H

Sometimes a shimmy isn’t a shimmy. I’ve been fighting a ‘shimmy’. I couldn’t find anything else wrong so I took my nose wheel to a local motorcycle shop to have it dynamically balanced. The guy that does the balancing at the shop is a pilot that owns a Maule. He pointed out how out of...

    Wheel broke into half

Stevensun Your comment about cleaning the bird nests is a good example of why finding an IA that will let you assist with the annual. Even if you just remove the seats, carpet, and inspection panels you’ll learn a lot about your plane and can take the time to do the grunt work your mechanic...

    Want To Buy Old ELT

I will be installing a new 406 unit during my annual that will start in the next two weeks. I’d be happy to send you my old ELT and antenna for the shipping cost. I need to do get rid of it anyway. I think there is a year left on the battery but could be wrong. I’m just upgrading now...

Garmin GNS 430/530 waas upgrades ending

I sent my 430 in for a waas upgrade about two weeks ago so it should be back any day. I considered moving to an IFD440 but that’s an additional $6000 that I didn’t want to spend right now. I like the added features the 440 comes with but have been flying with the 430 for a long time and I’m...

Any A&P/IA available for a owner assisted annual??

I found the guy I’m currently working with by walking around the hangers at my airport on a Saturday and asking the guys that were doing minor work on their planes who they used. It turns out that pilots that do things from changing their own oil to just washing their plane also seem to be...

High Wing Or Low Wing poll

I now own a Cardinal RG but would fly anything I’m permitted to fly. I do really like the view out of the Cardinal but the key is that my wife prefers to ride in a high wing for the view out her window. Anything that helps to keep my wife flying with me is a good thing.

Jack I got my copy yesterday and the first thing I did was to spot your photo credit. Great job as always. Gary

    Falcon Aviation Academy Closes Permanently

Sad new for the employees and especially for any students that put money down. In my experience when a flight school closes overnight like this it’s rare for students to get any refunds for money they’ve paid ahead. I hope this case will be the exception. Gary

Anyone have info on hanger availability near Bullhead, AZ?

It’s hot but in my experience not as bad as Houston in the summer. It might be a little cooler based on the actual temp in Arizona but the humidity in Houston kills me. I sweat in either place but in Houston my clothes just get soaked in sweat. At least in Arizona the sweat evaporates. The...

Anyone have info on hanger availability near Bullhead, AZ?

My wife and I are tentatively planning on moving to the Bullhead area by July. Does anyone know about hanger availability in that area? We’ll be flying out after she retires in May for some preliminary scouting, which will include visits to the local airports. Having a hanger or not will...

How good or bad were you in early instrument training?

How often are you flying? I used Gatts and flew 4 hours or so every day. In the first day or two I was clueless but by the fourth it clicked. I think flying daily helped me a lot. Gary

    formation flying?

I suggest signing up for a C2O clinic even if you don’t plan on going to Oshkosh. The cost of the clinic on formation flying was nothing compared to the quality training and the chance to get some real world experience in formation flying with folks that know what they are doing. I flew in the...

Crosswind landing with significant wind shear followed by icing at night

Great video Jon. I really liked the discussion on the icing you encountered. I don’t see much of that in southeast TX and do all I can to avoid an encounter in my 177RG. Gary

My 1st and preferably the last VFR into IMC

Mohammed: Thanks for having the courage to post this. Obviously it inspired a lot of discussion among the seasoned members and it may have helped a newer lurker from running into the same problem. I was also amazed at how different things are in actual IMC than they are in simulated IMC. I...

    Hummel H5

I have a friend that had a Hummel for a very short time. I don’t know which version it was. He’s not a very large pilot and thought it would be a very economical way to log hours. He flew it twice then sold it. He said the handling was ‘way to sporty’ for him. He’s been flying for a long...

    Shutting down NDBs

My ADF still works well and I still practice approaches at the few local airports that have working equipment. They aren’t precision approaches but aren’t difficult to fly and might be handy some day. Gary
