    Looking for other "pilots"

periodically there would be "hamsters," "pillows of death," "3x5"

    Looking for other "pilots"

I'm not sure there is, and its a blast to me able to operate a $2B submarine to its design limits with speed and turns. Everything is operated by touchscreens which controls all the systems for buoyancy, air, had, and such. Its so exhilarating which is probably why this is my next step since I...

    Looking for other "pilots"

Virginia class submarine drives are now pilot and co-pilot. Here is a picture of what the ships control station looks like: Right hand is on the "Joystick" for controlling the depth and course.

that is very true which could be similar to the lift=weight but its bouyance=weight.

    Looking for other "pilots"

Awesome, I was on a 637 and still think that was the best configured boat ever. With the new ones and all the technology, they must have forgot that people have to sleep on them and crammed bunks anywhere they could.

    Looking for other "pilots"

I've qualified on 2 different classes, LA and VA. Virginia class was by far the best, especially since they use an F-14 joystick for maneuvering. We always joked around that we were "switching to guns"

    Looking for other "pilots"

In the big scheme of things there really are not a lot of submarine pilots out there, but I thought maybe a couple would be at least PPL certified and be on this site.

    Looking for other "pilots"

Ryan, I think there are similar dynamics involved in flying both. As an example, the wings of an airplane cause lift and allow the plane to fly based on speed. Submarines are the same and the various "planes" can carry specific weight based on speed through the water, angle on the submarine...

    Looking for other "pilots"

I am actually looking to see if there are other submarine pilots on this site. That would mean that they served on Virginia-Class submarines and qualified as pilots. I am looking for a comparison from submarine to PPL qualifications, how much was similar? I understand there will be...

Peter, I understand that the preferred method is to have a consultation with an AME first to ensure I can get any required documentation to complete the medical.

Ken, thank you for that vital information about a denial for medical. That would make everything a non starter I think.

    Getting started...

Peter, Thank you for that info as it will become part of my determination on where to just get it done now or wait. In the end it couldn't hurt to have that knowledge even if I end up only getting my sport license.

    Getting started...

Peter, I can completely understand the reasoning why gliding can create a better understanding aerodynamics since its al you have without the use of an engine. I guess you could learn to respect the physics portion fo flying. Dana, I'm about 40 minutes for Cheshire and will keep that in mind...

That might be a good option too, I'll look and see what the local flight school has to offer.

Half, Thank you for the updated info and I'll need to keep my options open depending on how my initial medical goes.

Peter, Thanks for the link as I see that some of the training could be applied toward the PPL with some restrictions.
