    Auto conversion ideas

Aren't cranks already designed for that? A 4-cyl automotive crank has three main bearings, and will flex as the rods push on it. Probably better than directly attaching a prop to it, anyway.

    Decaf coffee [NA]

Decaf can taste good, it's just that most coffee places don't sell enough, they buy a bag and by the time they use it all it's gone stale. Also, roasting and brewing profiles are different, and using a Keurig or a regular drip coffee maker won't do it any favors. Here's what the 2007 World...

    What if... Modernizing GA

Splitting the market will result in a more expensive option for both sides.

Woman Backs Into Propeller, Kansas, fatal, 10/27

In the UK, on a "towered" grass field, you had to request permission to start your engine. Not the way I want things to go.

    What if... Modernizing GA

Economy of scale: if 3000 buyers want a 2-seater and 3000 want a 4-seater, it's cheaper to design and build a 4-seater for all of them. One of the issues with higher speeds is that you can't easily get there with a fixed pitch prop. And once you go to adjustable/constand speed prop, there will...

    What if... Modernizing GA

I'm leaning more towards a 4-seater, or at least an honest 3-seater. Most 2-seat airplames end up being single seaters at typical DAs and adult pilot weights of today. A 4-seater is a practical machine, takes the husband, wife, kid(s) and a bag. I think you need that for a good GA reboot.

    Mesa AZ incident.

What a preventable tragedy if it was caused by locked controls. Reports say they ran through the perimeter fence and hit a car. Some of the victims might not have been in the plane.

    Rules for using MOGAS?

Don't all those plastics have enough conductivity (by design) to reduce the risk of static sparks?

    What if... Modernizing GA

30 more knots requires 60% more power (and fuel) for the same airframe. While you can achieve that on a sleek, complex shaped, composite airframe, I don't think the cheap to produce/maintain/insure parts of the equation would be achieved.

    What if... Modernizing GA

It seems a lot of people want 200+ kt peformance with 5gph fuel burn, $1000 in maintenance costs per year and even less than that for insurance. Slightly exaggerating, but you get the idea. The planes that built GA were pretty much the VW Beetle of the sky. Before we can dream of future Mooney...

I hate those. They wear clothes quickly and rip them apart. A modern front loader will make things last a lot longer.

    What if... Modernizing GA

Agree with a lot of what you're saying, but VVT is practically useless in the narrow power/torque band we use those engines. And a Prius hybrid drivetrain is also useless, since you have no real opportunity for regen. Instead of the modified Arkinson cycle, a modern turbo (or turbocompounded)...
