    How should I do schooling?

I am not sure an aviation degree is useless. Some specialize in related fields other than piloting, such as airport management, etc. Talk with an advisor at an aviation college or university. In our area, many go to Minnesota State University at Mankato for a four-year degree. Some get an...

    Flying by the numbers ?

Had AOA indicators in some of the C-130s. They told us not to use them, that they couldn't be trusted. Didn't have them in the T-38s when I flew them.

Pre Buy Inspection - Who generally pays for moving the plane?

The way I have seen it is the seller would be responsible for any airworthiness issues discovered on the pre-buy inspection. Otherwise, it is sold "as-is" or buyer and seller could negotiate any desirable but not airworthiness service or repairs.

    Forgetting to switch tanks

I thought you were talking about cruise flight. Slipping on final is a relatively short event, so I would not expect fuel imbalance to be significant. Yes, with a low amount in the tank it could stop feeding at a critical time in a slip. Same thing with rolling and turning on takeoff, which...

    Forgetting to switch tanks

Hmmm. I am struggling to understand how the wind has any effect on gravity feed in cruise flight.

Thanks, I had not heard those terms before.

    Forgetting to switch tanks

I was flying a rented Piper Arrow when the engine quit. I switched to the other tank and it immediately started. But what had me worried was the fuel indicator for the dry tank was reading one quarter. So, I wasn't sure I could trust the other indicator, either. This happened over the...

Pre Buy Inspection - Who generally pays for moving the plane?

I have bought and sold three airplanes. As a buyer, I did not require a prebuy on the first two since I knew the local owners and how the planes had been flown and maintained. The third one was 35 miles away, and I went there with my A&P for the prebuy. As a seller, the first one went to my...

    IMC definition for approach logging

For 17 years I flew a Bonanza without an IFR-certified GPS. Lots of LOC BC approaches at my home drome, Kalamazoo, and also Green Bay. DME arc approach at Central Wisconsin Airport (no longer published) and one or two others. Yes, the airplane had DME. I think arcs were easier to fly at high...

Training has stalled. Advice sought. What would you do in my position?

I have a few hours in Ercoupes. Fun little airplanes.

    Flying by the numbers ?

Not sure I understand. What is a "flat" brake. What is a "feathered" brake.

Gravity is broken (worst journalism ever)

Certainly different in TV news. I seldom had to report more than two stories a day, usually just one. I was also a news director for four different stations and would never expect any reporter to cover six stories in one day. To be fair, the newscast producer and the anchor people might...

Ah... no. We teach recovery from a full stall, both power on and off, for primary students.

    Flying by the numbers ?

Dave, you didn't say what airplane you were flying. The numbers 80, 70, 65 work for most Cessna Skyhawks (knots). That's assuming 10 degrees of flaps on downwind, 20 degrees on base, and 30 on final. As you gain experience, you will also gain the ability to "feel" the appropriate airspeed in...

Etiquette for using a friends plane

I no longer own but have access to two airplanes. One belongs to a former student of mine who is gone all winter and wants it flown now and then. The other belonged to a friend who died of COVID a couple of years ago. His family does not want to sell it, and none of them fly, so they have me...

Handheld transceiver recommendations? Icom, Yaesu, or Sporty's?

I have owned an Icom AC-22 for many years. I lost the alkaline battery adapter so just use the rechargeable nicad. I have had Batteries Plus rebuild that two times in about 30 years, for roughly $50. It works great, and my primary use for it is to get a weather forecast from home. I am only...
