    Mountain Flying VFR/IFR

I go with analyzing the additive risk factors mentioned earlier. I’ve spent quite a bit of time flying the Rockies, learned to fly in the ABQ area, and flown from there to the PHX area a lot. 172s and 182s, with family. I won’t do any of it at night, and most I won’t do IFR. But, unlike...

    Safety Pilot Etiquette

I know a guy that uses his 15yr old son to watch for traffic and “make sure I don’t hit anything” while he’s under the hood. Seems to work so far.

    Flight training on vacation

Well Tampa Bay Aviation -who I was hoping to get some Com training time with in G1000 172’s - just told me to pound sand they’re too busy for “transients” - I was trying to do at least a couple of hrs a day for 5 days at least. No joy….

What was the first aviation related book that you read?

Middle School I think - Great American Fighter Pilots of WW2

    Traveling in old airplanes

All of the states (except AK) colored in below were visited in a ‘68 C150, a ‘69 C172 or in my current ‘73 C182. I’ve been stuck for weather, but I don’t recall getting stuck because something broke. Now, I’ve had to cancel a few trips because something was wrong, but that’s been pretty rare.

    ForeFlight Subscription Changes

FF has such a high usefulness-to-cost ratio I have no problem paying a bit more. Frankly it’s always blown my mind a bit how much I get for $200. And compared to all of the other costs of flying?? No-brainer.

    Cessna made in China

I get it :) A huge part of the problem is that so many of our “leaders” are on Chinas payroll.

    Would you have continued flight?

Happened to me with an electronic tach. Everything else was good so I took a short video of what the tach was doing and sent it to my A&P in-flight. He thought it was an instrument issue and I’d be fine and have it checked at home which was only another 30 minutes or so. It was an instrument...

    IFR C150 upgrades [help]

Lots of us got our IR without WAAS, G5’s, etc. My rating didn’t “go bad” with a move up in aircraft and avionics. I think getting you’re IR with the bare minimums is absolutely fine. Know your limitations. And the rating is a license to learn, so moving into more modern capability is done...

    Whats the difference in autopilots?

Admittedly don’t know a ton about Garmin stuff and integrating with other stuff - but what about STEC?

Interested newbie, looking for economical options with great availability & flexibility

OP - I’ve “been there, done that”. After my divorce got a PhD and a pilots license. My separation was WV to JAX, so much greater than yours and much more weather to worry about. So before I bought a house, I bought a 172. Had maybe 200 hrs PIC when I did that. Used the plane A LOT to be...

Solo own a 182 vs. 1/4 Partnership in a Cirrus?

I owned a 172 solo, now in a 182 w a partner for 14 yrs. He doesn’t fly anymore and is looking to get out, so it’s been just me flying with someone else to help pay for annuals. When he did fly scheduling conflicts were extremely rare, and we were both pretty active. I’m torn about buying his...

    Thoughts on Vans RV?

Do you want to fly from point A to point B in a fairly fast, simple, economical airplane that handles well, has a good safety record, and is fun to fly? Then an RV might be for you.

    Looong XC Concerns

I had about 90 hrs TT when I took a C150 (climb prop, 85 knots I think) from ABQ to Denver Centennial then to JAX Fl and back to ABQ. By myself, a lot of stops, overnights, weather issues, etc. A really great experience for a new pilot. Hand-held GPS and paper charts. It was awesome.

Advice - don't add it up

I’ve never really thought of flying as a “hobby”, any more than I think driving is. I guess that makes it easier to not worry about the cost. The other thing that helps is that the VALUE of flying is very meaningful - if I wanted to I suppose I could do the math - I have a “billable rate”, and...

What do you use your plane for?

I guess everything you’d use one for. A 182 beats hell out of airlines for time and convenience for us east of the Mississippi. I use it for occasional out of state work, I fly for a charitable organization, we use it to see family in IL, SC and FL. Weekend trips, and once or twice a year a...

    Best route thru New Mexico?

Used to be based at AEG. I love flying all of the area north of I40. If flying I40, the canyon it goes through east of ABQ can be nasty in a small plane when it’s windy, and I always liked going around the Sandias to the north anyway.

    New MOA in WV?

Yep - MU has a South Charleston campus already. CRW is bigger/better, more infrastructure, commercial activity, Air Guard, etc. Much better choice. New A/C maintenance program going in to HTS.

    PA32-300. Am I a Cherokee or a Saratoga?

I'm pretty clear about being a Skylane but probably a third or more of the time they just use Skyhawk - generic I guess.
