Why do we switch fuel tanks before landing?

Primarily you want to make sure you have an uninterrupted flow in case of a go around. You shouldn't be that low when you make this change. This is an "in range" item, not something you do on final. Of course, it woke me up fast when my wife turned the fuel selector to OFF rather than MAIN...

Gear up landing, when does the FAA get involved?

In some states, the state troopers are tasked with investigating aviation accidents. Twice in Virginia I've had to sit in a state police car and help an officer who had no idea about aviation fill out his accident report form. The funny one was when one went to the FBO and asked if there was...

    Lien Issue

If you don't get him to deal with it, you'll have the same problem when you sell. I can almost guarantee that there is a successor to the bank that held the lien who still has a valid claim here. Statute of limitations doesn't apply here. The lienholder doesn't have to proactively do...

Gear up landing, when does the FAA get involved?

A couple of years ago I'm at Oshkosh and my cell rings. It's CLT Approach and they want to know the status of my airport (the airport manager number routes to my cell). I tell him I have no idea. He says an airplane (gives me the N number) has geared up there. I type the N number into...

    It's official... BasicMed expanded

Actually, the FAA was all for medical reform. It was a certain class of lobbyists that scuttled it at the DOT level prior to the congressional intervention.

Why would an altimeter be incorrect?

Sounds more like an obstruction than a leak. I had a completely blocked static system once (this was five weeks after 9/11 when they finally let me get my plane out of Potomac Airfield). It was reading about 100-200 feet AGL even though I was much higher.

Published Approach to a closed runway

The approach also have circling minima. Runway 36 is only notamed close until the end of the year (but as I always say, no matter what the NOTAM says, it's not open until the guy picking up the X gets off the runway). As for the unusual angle and designation, you'd have to ask some TERPS...

    Brokers

That's only an issue if you're someplace where "casual sale" means anything. I owed the use tax whether I bought it from the broker or not. The revenooers here mine the FAA database looking for new registrations.

    Inside hangar homes

Depends on what your local codes are. Here in North Carolina, a residential hangar of 2000 square feet or less only requires a two hour firewall. That means a solid door and double (or thicker) drywall. That's what car garages on houses up in Virginia required.

If you're talking about the GNS480 (or the MX20), it takes a CF card not an SD.

    Autonomous Fly-By-Wire?

I don't recall the specifics. I wasn't directly involved with the research, but they let me come over and look at the stuff because I was in the Aero club and generally interested in the technology (moreso than the experiment they were attempting to perform).

    Brokers

I was relatively happy with the broker when I bought my plane. He handled talking to the owner (and convincing him to accept my terms). He also booked up the various things that needed be done including setting up escrow. I didn't actually meet the seller through any part of this. About...
